What a scam
What a scam. My 75 year old father had a bad leak in his house and didn’t want to bother us and so he took it upon himself to call Hanson’s. They came out and quoted him $10,000 for only the center portion of his tiny roof.. not the front porch or the backside of the house- because he couldn’t afford any more. Mind you, his house is SMALL (822 square feet in total). They gave him a salesman pitch on who their contractors are and the materials they use.. and that it’s guaranteed for life. He signed the contract and put $2000 down. Thank god I talked to him the night before he could cancel this contract. Because not only would the roof not be guaranteed for life considering they were only doing the middle section and water runs down— therefore any future leaks would have been blamed on the portions not done. My significant other is a contractor and he had his men come out and estimate the ENTIRE roof (rotten wood and all) to be done for $7000 or less. Hanson’s probably would have charged minimum $16,000 if they were quoting $10,000 for only the middle portion. And they were going to finance this for him at a rate of over 9%. The salesman he worked with was very obviously taking advantage of an elderly person who didn’t know any better. When my dad called to cancel his contract within the 3 business days he was allowed to do so, this salesman began verbally abusing my father over the phone.. yelling at him about how whoever he hires will be crooks and drug dealers. My dad politely said, okay, this conversation ends here, I’m hanging up. As the salesman continued to yell at him until my dad hung up the phone. The next day my dad went to his credit union and learned he was able to take out a home equity loan for an interest rate of 4.75%. So not only is he going to get his roof replaced for under half the cost of Hanson’s, by very honest and reputable people, even his interest rate is half of what they were going to provide at Hanson’s. The sales rep that met with my father took advantage of him not knowing any better and using his sales pitch jargon. The salesman realized my dad is on a fixed income and tried to reduce his monthly payments so it “felt better”. This company, and especially the salesman he worked with wholeheartedly and knowingly took advantage of an elderly person. Shame on them. For what? Commission in their pockets? I would highly advise to avoid this company at all costs. Get quotes from 3 companies and then you’ll see how this specific business operates. I’ve heard of Hanson’s dropping their cost by almost half when someone wasn’t immediately hooked, like my father was. That right there tells you that they’re legitimately trying to take advantage of people. Quoting obnoxiously high, hoping they get a client who doesn’t know any better.. and providing a 30-60 min spiel of why they’re the best and why they charge what they do. I plan on taking this complaint to the better business bureau because it was THAT obsurd and wrongful.
