I had one of those dog doors you add in to a patio door, which was OK, but I couldn't use (or lock) the patio door, and the seal between the two doors was poor. I changed to a Hale dog door that went through a newly-constructed wall. The improvement is amazing -- the door has double flaps, so it's much better insulated (and keeps the bugs out); I can use my patio door again; and Charlie the dog learned to use the new Hale door in about 2 minutes. The Hale door was easy to size to fit the thickness of the wall, and I like the way the dog door can be closed and locked when I'm away from home for extended periods.

The doors are very well constructed and easy to install. They are a bit expensive though. Can buy two doors of other brands and install each on on opposite sides of the wall. Not an exact apples to apples comparison but for the cost savings is a consideration.
