I've owned my Daniel Boone since 2019, and this was the first issue I've ever had with it. Customer service took care of the problem immediately and went above and beyond to make sure everything was resolved. A shout out to Eric with customer support. His genuine commitment to making sure the issue was fixed and that I was happy with the outcome was impressive. It's rare to find that level of customer service these days. Great product, and even better support when you need it. Grilling again!!

In the trash where it belongs
Well, I finally figured out the best place for my Daniel Boone smoker: the trash.
I’ve owned this GMG Daniel Boone pellet grill for approximately 10 years, and unfortunately the ownership experience was frustrating almost from the beginning. In fact, my support history with these issues goes all the way back to late 2015, not long after purchase.
Over the years I replaced multiple components including control boards, WiFi boards, and temperature probes. Even when functioning, the smoker struggled to maintain accurate and consistent temperatures.
The biggest ongoing problem was moisture intrusion into the pellet/auger system. Despite being stored outdoors with a cover, consistent with the intended use of an outdoor smoker, I repeatedly dealt with swollen pellets, auger jams, and complete tear-downs to get the grill operational again. During the latest repair attempt, the auger itself finally failed.
I also contacted my local dealer regarding these recurring issues and was essentially told they could “find nothing wrong,” despite years of repeated failures and repairs.
I understand that any grill can wear out after a decade. The problem here is not that it eventually failed, it’s that it was unreliable for most of its lifespan. I spent more time troubleshooting, replacing parts, and disassembling this smoker than actually enjoying it.
Maybe GMG’s newer models are better, but this experience completely ended my willingness to purchase another Green Mountain Grill product.
Update after company response:
GMG asked whether the smoker was 10-11 years old. Yes, it is. However, the core issue is that the reliability problems began within roughly 3 months of purchase and continued throughout ownership...
Daniel Boone Issue Timeline (Purchased 8/20/2015)
• 11/26/2015 (3 months after purchase)
Reported major temperature inaccuracies. Grill set to 300° but actual measured temp was approximately 350° using external thermometers. Verified in multiple locations inside grill.
• 01/24/2016
Followed up after firmware updates and troubleshooting. Grill still running dramatically hotter than indicated:
Set to 380°, actual ~455°
Set to 215°, actual ~251°
Described concern that “set it and forget it” functionality was fundamentally inaccurate.
• 02/2016
Food probe failures began shortly after firmware update. Probe displayed “nFd” errors and ultimately required replacement under warranty.
• 05/21/2016
Major malfunction while cooking:
Grill suddenly displayed 542°
Stopped heating properly
Could not be reset
WiFi signal lost
Described grill as “essentially useless at this point.”
• 05–06/2016
Dealer evaluated smoker after repeated issues. Dealer replaced control board and food probe but ultimately stated they “found nothing wrong,” despite repeated documented temp inaccuracies and failures.
• 08/20/2016
Third food probe failure reported. Noted broken internal solder connection despite probe remaining plugged in continuously. Also documented prior WiFi board replacement by dealer.
• 11/2017
Reported control board/button failure. “Up” button stopped functioning entirely. Also referenced prior WiFi board replacement and three prior temp probe replacements.
• 06–07/2018
Severe temperature sensor issues:
Grill reading 347° while OFF
Later reading 273° while OFF
Grill temperatures running 80–100° above actual temp
GMG suggested thermal sensor replacement.
• 08/28/2018
Another major malfunction:
Grill registered 527°
Significant smoke event
Bottom of smoker filled with pellets
Described as “a small campfire”
By this point, documented replacements included:
Main board
Temp probe
Food probe (3x)
WiFi antenna/board
Additional components
• 2019–2026
Continued ongoing ownership issues including moisture intrusion into pellet/auger system causing swollen pellets, repeated auger jams requiring disassembly, and eventual auger failure during teardown.
Summary:
The issue was never that the smoker finally failed after 10+ years. The issue was that reliability problems began within months of purchase and continued throughout ownership across multiple major components and systems.

Hi Mr. Chris Farmer
We want to address this in great detail but can you confirm that your unit is 11 year old unit that you are reviewing?
Thank you in advance

Not dependable.
I received my smoker as a gift. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! 2 months later my power cord shorts out. Thy sent a replacement. 6 months later, mt igniter goes out. Now, it won't power up. They are good at sending parts, but the product is crappy. Try and get tech support, good luck with that. I will never buy any product from this company.Very CHEAP!

I am not a happy camper.
I bought my Green Mountain Grill, Davy Crockett grill back in 2020. I have had problems with it from day one. I am now replacing the controller board for the fourth time. They claim that the grill can reach 500°F, if you get to that temperature you can watch the paint burn right off of the grill. customer service is worthless.
Response from Green Mountain GrillsMay 21, 2026
Sorry Michael. Sounds like it could be a number of things inckuding heatshield set up or grease tray set up but most likely a firmware update. This unit does go to 550 F.

Parts and customer service could use some work
Grill works pretty good, but the features and the parts do not. The wifi doesnt stay connected, been that way since i bought it. The buttons on the control panel stick, sometimes I cant turn it on/off or adjust the temp. The ignitor will stop working, company knows they are faulty and just expects you to replace them. Once the grill is out of warranty it will be out of your pocket. Customer service actually reccomended I purchase two this time, for when the next one fails. Seems like they know they have an issue, just do not care.
Response from Green Mountain GrillsMay 25, 2026
So sorry for the troubles. We absolutely care. There are firmware updates to fix and secure the longevity of the igniter. Again, sorry for the troubles.

I've had my GMG Ledge grill for a few years and just got the newer smaller version the Trek prime. Both are just amazing to use. No issues, they work as intended and the food that comes off is always INCREDIBLE!

I have used just about every pellet…
I have used just about every pellet grill on the market. What I like about GMG is they consistently push the envelope on innovation. Many of the industry standard features were pioneered by GMG. I also appreciate that their assembly consists of all 10mm hex head bolts. No flimsy sheet metal screw like you get with the box stores. Heavy construction, a wide temp range and excellent customer service.

GMG grills are for people who actually…
GMG grills are for people who actually cook and don't need a deck ornament. I've cooked with a couple other brands and I can see why other grill companies copy GMG innovations.
I LOVE my GMG.
