Stock Management from the Late 90's E-tail Experience
My vision insurance was running out so I ordered a pair of glasses. Billing and insurance apparently went fine. I went back to their catalog later the same day and the frames were listed as sold out. I had a quick laugh over that, thinking I must have been fortunate enough to buy the last pair. A week and a half later I received an email stating my order had been cancelled - with no explanation. I got onto chat with their customer service and was informed that the frames I wanted were out of stock and there was no prediction for when they would come back, but that they'd be able to back-date a new purchase with my old insurance and "Sorry for the inconvenience..." yadda-yadda-yadda. So, I started looking for new glasses and found the exact same frames still listed and not as "Sold Out." So, I contacted customer service again for clarification and "Sorry.." blah-blah-blah "We haven't updated our site". So, in other words, they let let sold-out frames display in their online catalog for *at least* 11 days. I say "at least" because who knows how long before my order they actually sold out. And they expect me to order a different pair with any confidence that the next pair I like won't put me through the same wringer? Sorry, guys. Inventory management is one of the absolutely most basic functions of the modern online retail space. If you don't have it, it shouldn't show up, and definitely shouldn't still be listed 11 days later. But I guess I have no choice but to go through it again if I'm going to claim anything from my prior vision plan provider...
