You get what you pay for: I'll be spending more elsewhere next time
Unfortunately, I won't be a returning customer, and my overall feeling at Gema&Co has been one of unease, being talked down to, and feeling like I had made a mistake by going with them early on in the process. I wanted a truly bespoke ring, and I was stunned by how affordable the initial quote was. It seemed too good to be true, and I suspect it is. You are required to pay in full up front before they will begin the design process. So, I felt a little bit "committed" after this point. In the future, I would be go with company that offers a different payment policy. Once they had my money, they became a little aggressive. My ring showed up in unacceptable condition: my design involved a half bezel that needed to cover the four corners of the stone. Upon arrival, one corner was completely exposed. It also looked somehow dented or scratched on this corner. It was definitely a manufacturing error, which is weird for a bespoke ring supposedly made by hand in the USA. When I mentioned this to the customer service representative, she sent me the following copy+paste message: "Please note that gold is an inherently soft metal and will dent/deform with strikes and contact with other metals. The reason it became the premier metal for jewelry work was because wearing gold showcased that you did not need to perform any manual labor that would damage or deform the jewelry throughout ancient history." Make of that what you will! They have offered to remake the ring, but they have quoted me a timeline of 3 weeks from receiving to begin work, which makes me a little skeptical of where their rings are made. They are always extremely diplomatic to refer to it as "the casting team", "the design team", etc, and I suspect they do not maintain any actual staff, but instead subcontract out the rings somewhere. This is the exact kind of impersonal service I could've gotten at any big name jeweller. I'll be going with a true small business next time.
Response from Gema&CoMay 1, 2025
Hi Katherine, Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for our setter hollowing out the base of the ring as that's normally done automatically and something that slipped his mind. As discussed via email, we began remaking your ring entirely last week and have offered you a full refund as well if you're dissatisfied. Please let us know your thoughts once the new ring is received and we hope the new ring is everything you were expecting. As always, if there's anything bothering you, don't hesitate to reach out to us via email or text. - Sandra Lee, Gema&Co
