An Angry C.
Deceptive Marketing
What an impressive business model. They advertise a relatively low price to get you interested, and then the extra charges begin. First, there is a separate “booking fee” on top of the helicopter ride itself. Apparently, allowing a customer to book the service they are already paying for is now considered an additional premium service. Then there are even more fees. For a doors-off helicopter ride, for example, you are asked to pay extra to “guarantee” an outside seat. The helicopter has six seats in total, and only one of them is not an outside seat. So, in other words, they have somehow managed to turn a one-in-six possibility into another paid upgrade. And I am quite confident that if you refuse to pay for this “guarantee,” they will do everything possible to place you in that one middle seat, even if other outside seats are empty. Because apparently an empty seat is more valuable than giving a customer a reasonable experience without charging them again. It is difficult to describe this as anything other than a disguised form of forced upselling. Their strategy is simple: advertise a low headline price, attract the customer, and then slowly reveal a collection of extra fees, conditions, and “optional” upgrades that do not feel very optional at all. So yes, the initial price may look attractive. Just make sure you bring your wallet, because apparently the helicopter is not the only thing designed to take off. So what was my actual experience? I paid $148 for the base fare, another $118 as a “booking fee,” another $100 to upgrade the flight time, and an additional fee to guarantee an outside seat. I do not even remember how much that last fee was. And yes, different flight times can also cost more. At that point, you might reasonably assume that after paying for the flight, paying to book the flight, paying to extend the flight, and paying to guarantee an outside seat, you have probably finished paying. You would be wrong. I was then told that I could not bring my own GoPro onto the helicopter. If I wanted GoPro footage, I could pay another $99 to use theirs. I declined. That turned out to be a very expensive $99 decision. They placed me in the seat directly behind the pilot — conveniently, the only outside seat on the entire helicopter where you cannot properly put your legs outside. What a remarkable coincidence. Out of all the available outside seats, I somehow ended up in the one seat that gave me the worst version of the experience I had already paid extra for. Maybe I misunderstood the system. Perhaps the $99 GoPro upgrade also secretly includes the “please do not punish me with the worst seat” package. I really should have paid it. That seems to be the theme of the entire experience: the advertised price gets you through the door, and then almost every part of the experience becomes another opportunity to charge you. Booking fee. Flight-time fee. Outside-seat fee. GoPro fee. Higher prices for different time slots. None of these charges seem particularly impressive on their own. The impressive part is how creatively they have managed to divide one helicopter ride into so many separate things that require additional payment. And if you decide that you have paid enough, do not worry — they seem perfectly capable of reminding you why you should have paid more. This was my experience. Make of it what you will.
