In preparation for our move, we contracted the moving company for a white-glove, full-service move. Prior to the move, the company conducted two walkthroughs of our home and provided a written estimate of approximately 1,000 cubic feet of household goods. After the second walkthrough, the company advised that the total could be slightly higher, so we proactively added an additional ~100 cubic feet to ensure sufficient space. On the day of the move, after arriving at our home and reviewing the items again, the movers abruptly stated that the volume was now approximately 2,000 cubic feet—double the original estimate—and informed us that the cost would therefore double. They refused to load a single item unless we immediately signed off on the revised space and cost. I asked whether we could prioritize essential items and adjust the load accordingly, but the movers refused any compromise. With no prior experience loading a household into a truck, no independent ability to assess cubic footage, and under extreme time pressure due to a same-day move deadline, we were placed in an untenable position. At that point, the company had already taken a deposit, and canceling would have resulted in the loss of thousands of dollars. Under this duress, we were forced to proceed. As a result, we paid over $11,000, despite being originally quoted approximately $6,000. Even after disputing the discrepancy with the company, they reduced the cost by only ~$1,000, which does not reasonably account for a 100% error in their original estimate. Awful and extremely traumatic experience.
