Honorable return policy, poor product performance, and safety concerns
I bought these plugs, followed the prescribed insertion procedure several times, following ALL aspects of the procedure, and here are my observations: I believe these are not safe for insertion and here's why: when they are gently but firmly pressed to fully seal the ear canal there is no way for pressure to escape between plug and eardrum. This means any pressure applied after insertion, for example if you happen to bump into the plug, is transmitted to the eardrum and I found this to be uncomfortable and slightly painful in each ear. If one tries to push/seal them too quickly again that pressure if fully transmitted to the eardrum and it's uncomfortable so you have to go slow with this step. It's very loud when you bump into the plug because vibration if fully conducted to the drum. This does not happen w/ foam plugs. I would like to see how an otolaryngologist or audiologist would rate the SAFETY of this design over foam plugs. The company claims to have the highest rated noise reduction, but I have yet to experience what that is in Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) that is published w/ high grade plugs such as Howard Leight MAX at 33dB, or 3M Orange at 29dB. I do not believe the Mighty Plugs are reducing sound anywhere near these two levels of NRR achieved w/ these foam plugs. I use plugs every day for motorcycling and require the best possible plugs. Finally, these plugs, when following the prescribed procedure take much longer to insert than quality foam plugs properly inserted. On the plus side, they would be re-usable to a much higher degree than properly inserted foam plugs. The company kindly returned most of my payment for a $20 set of plugs. For the many folks who claim in testimonials these plugs are the best my guess is that many/most of them do not insert foam plugs properly. To be inserted to insure the full NRR of qualify foam plugs they need to be rolled to a small diameter and inserted almost as far as they can be which takes some skill to do, but then as I say NRR is full. Addendum after Mary's comment: I'm afraid you're wrong on both counts. No head cold, don't work for foam plug companies. Moreover, since the beeswax method is solid, there is no question when you tap on one that is sealed the vibration/sound is transmitted pretty much fully to the ear drum. Your eustachian tube lives on the other side of the drum, so absolutely pressure applied to solid media beeswax IS fully transmitted to the drum--there is no way around that. My eustachian tubes are patent as evidenced by the fact they equilibrate when changing elevation. I have had bad head colds in the past as most of us have, and this indeed causes troubles w/ elevation changes on the plane or riding fast up/down big elevation changes on my moto. Now Mary, since your company makes this claim 'Rated " BEST " { Sound Blocking }', WHAT is the NRR for these when properly used?
Response from Mighty Plugs: The World's Finest EarplugsOct 20, 2016
Oh NCP: Yes, WE ARE AN (( HONORABLE COMPANY )) that invites (( ALL REVIEWS )), whether they are positive or negative NCP, your statements and speculations about our soft and mouldable Beeswax ear plugs are completely FALSE & UNTRUE !!! Your statements indicate that you are either suffering from a "HEAD COLD" or quite possibly on the payroll from a Foam ear plug company !!! It is obvious that you have presently or recently had a head cold, Flu or sinus congestion issue, for there are no issues with pressure in a healthy body or sinus cavilty when wearing our ear plug. NCP, from what you describe, it appears that you should "decompress" your ears and sinus cavity to alleviate the experience that you might feel as in an airplane that was reducing altitude. Then, with your sinus cavity pressure cleared, you could have a completely different experience with our ear plug. In over 21 years, having served 6 million customers (including ourselves) who wear this magnificent Beeswax ear plug daily, we have never receive reports like yours (( UNLESS THE CUSTOMERS HAD BEEN ILL )). Most sincerely Mary-customer service and a very very very satisfied 14 year daily and nightly wearer
