CVS Caremark is black box. They do not communicate clearly or accurately...and decisions/processing is black box (hidden). It does seem like there should be some oversight/gov't review of their workings. They constantly say they just work the plan and plan changes... and I assume what they mean is when the corporate insurance that is using them need to reduce spending they change plans to reduce spending. It makes sense...but seems to be based on $$ and not on health coverage. It is impossible to tell since nobody ever knows what they are doing. It is like a shell game. I just wish:
(a) They would communicate better. Their letters (if you get them) are horrible.
and
(B) They would be more transparent. I understand trying to reduce costs... but they way it happens is so unclear until you get swept up in what looks like a money grab by the plan manger and they have not alternative for RX your doctor has you on.
It seems easy enough to ask for better communication and more transparency. These are two things I find lacking at CVS Caremark.

Trash compny
This is the worst insurance I have ever had. They don’t even know one generic from another, and denials I assume are handled by a bunch of dropouts without an ounce of medical training. All they want you to do is switch to direct with them, but I would not trust these morons with my bank card ever.

If I couple give it negative stars I…
If I couple give it negative stars I would ! I take about 8 prescriptions and I have NEVER had this much trouble getting them filled . They are the most incompetent establishment I have ever dealt with , and the fact that they are responsible for peoples health is sad and scary! I switched to them because it was going to save me money to fill 3 month supplies , but I would much rather just pay the higher cost than to ever have to deal with them again ! Withholding needed medications hectare they incorrectly billed me is wild ! And that is just one of the issues I have had with then ! DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE

Delayed care and poor record keeping
Caremark has been contracted by my BCBS insurance to manage prescription coverage. I had a medication that needed prior approval. My doctor's office said they sent over the prior approval 5 times in a three month period. The order and my diagnosis were well within the stared parameters for approval and should have been simple. One of those was reported as received early on. Then, I was told Caremark cancelled that PA but they had not retained record of the submitted document or why they cancelled it. As we approached the three month mark of needing this medication and not getting it covered, they accepted another attempt by the office. My provider was told the could not expedite it but there would be a determination within 1-3 business days. After three business days, no determination I reached out to Caremark and they apologized and was told I should have been told it could be up to five business days. After that mark, I was told it would be done as soon as possible. I reached out to my prescriber she saw on her end that the PA had been cancelled again. I called customer service and they said it would go through as soon as possible at first, but when I mentioned that my provider saw it as cancelled they confirmed it was and again couldn't say why, indicated there was no record, and indicated it just needed to be resubmit. I requested documentation of anything they had of the process on their end and they told me there were no records to give. I reached out to BCBS directly and the representative called and was told it wasn't cancelled but they needed to know the name of the provider that ordered the medication and had submitted all these PAs. My provider called directly and it's finally being filled. Three months of calls and self advocacy, delay of necessary medication, and ridiculously poor record keeping on Caremark's part was completely unacceptable.

Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY!
Do yourself a favor and completely avoid cvs caremark! I never waste time writing reviews or complaining about companies but the nightmare this insurance company put me through for one of my prescriptions has pissed me off to the point that I just feel it necessary! If I can even save one person from going with this company it was worth it! Trying to fill one prescription and they could not get their shit together! I had to call customer service SEVERAL times and everytime it became more clear that they had no idea what was happening. I would get denials for my medicine and the reasons they gave were laughable. Example: "Your coverage for medicine X was declined because we want you to try Medicine Z first". So my doctor would call in medicine Z only for them to say "we don't cover medicine Z you should go on medicine X" umm... really the medicine we tried to originally call in??? Another reason I was denied was " the quantity of the medicine was not covered" Those 30 day scripts are super rare I guess. That was " an error on their part" another reason I was denied was because I should try medicine A even though my doctor already told you I have tried medicine A and it didn't work. 1st of all you are not a doctor you are an insurance company so stop trying to decide my medicine for me and second of all look into my records and you'll see that I already tried that medicine! I was out of my medicine for weeks and was given many different excuses and none of them were accurate. Their system sucks their employees were kind but obviously need more training and they clearly don't care about people's health and well being because every time I called they would ask how long i have been out of medicine and when I told them they just said things like "oh no" but still did nothing to help. Eventually after a month they worked their shit out and I got my script. I was trying to put this past me and move on but now my husband is going through something similar with them so I'm reliving it all over again. Please people choose your insurance company carefully and STAY AWAY FROM CVS CAREMARK!!

⭐ 1 STAR
⭐ 1 STAR — Unacceptable handling of essential medications
My experience with CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy has been extremely frustrating and, more importantly, has left me concerned about the way they handle medications that patients depend on.
I requested a refill of my estradiol approximately 2½ weeks ago. For that entire time, CVS Caremark showed that my prescription was being processed and indicated that it would be processed on September 24. When September 24 finally arrived, I was informed that the medication was OUT OF STOCK.
Why wasn’t I told this two weeks earlier?
Had CVS Caremark notified me when I originally requested the refill that they couldn’t supply the medication, I would have had plenty of time to contact my doctor and arrange to have it filled at a local pharmacy. Instead, I waited more than two weeks believing my medication was being processed, only to find out at the last minute that they couldn’t fill it. Now I am having to scramble to find a local pharmacy that has it available.
Unfortunately, that isn’t even the most concerning part of my experience.
I am currently out of town and accidentally left my metoprolol at home. I only need TWO tablets until I return home. Metoprolol is a prescription medication that should not be abruptly discontinued without medical guidance because doing so can potentially cause serious cardiovascular problems.
Naturally, I contacted CVS pharmacies thinking that, because my prescription is handled through CVS Caremark, they could help me obtain two emergency doses. Instead, I was told CVS Pharmacy and CVS Caremark are separate entities and the local CVS pharmacies could not simply access and fill my Caremark prescription.
From a patient’s perspective, this is incredibly frustrating. Both carry the CVS name, yet when a patient needs help obtaining an essential medication, suddenly the different parts of the organization cannot work together.
A pharmacy system should be designed around continuity of care and preventing patients from unexpectedly running out of medication. Patients shouldn’t discover after waiting 2½ weeks that a medication is unavailable, nor should someone traveling have to spend hours trying to figure out how to obtain two doses of an existing prescription.
CVS Caremark needs much better communication regarding medication availability and a better process for helping patients obtain essential prescriptions when problems arise.
Based on these experiences, I have completely lost confidence in CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy.

This company must instruct its employees to be obtuse
This company must instruct its employees to make things as difficult as humanly possible before doing their jobs. I’ll name ONE complaint. My spouse and I both have, in writing, an agreement with CVS Caremark to telephone us before shipping ANY medications that we will have copay for us to pay. They AGREED, in WRITING, to this yet they continually ship orders to us with copays! Then they act ignorant when reminded of this agreement. Are they not adults? Are they illiterate? What could POSSIBLY be the excuse for this?!? To make it worse, too many insurance companies REQUIRE us to use them only for our mail order delivery service. DATE OF EXPERIENCE: Entire year of 2026!!
