Misleading Subscription Model and Lack of Transparency
Care.com is misleading. It presents itself as a marketplace similar to Thumbtack, but it is not. You are required to create an account just to search, and only after doing so do you discover that you must pay a significant subscription fee simply to contact a provider. You are paying merely to send a message to someone who may or may not ever clean your house. What makes it worse is that providers can contact you, which creates the impression that you can respond freely. In reality, you cannot reply unless you are paying. That wastes everyone’s time and creates unnecessary confusion. Some providers here complain about “fake jobs.” They aren’t fake. It’s Care.com’s shady marketing practices. We CANNOT reply. They shouldn’t send our info to you if we don’t join. In August 2024, Care.com agreed to an approximately $8.5 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations of deceptive claims about job availability and earnings and making it difficult for users to cancel subscriptions. The company did not admit wrongdoing, but the issues raised in that case reflect the same lack of transparency that users still experience. Costs and subscription requirements should be clearly disclosed before someone creates an account and certainly before people begin messaging one another.
Response from Care.comMar 3, 2026
Care.com is a paid subscription service. It's not our intent to be misleading, however! The fees help to provide the many features our site offers, which set us apart from any free classified site.
