Pass on Brex...Shady Application Reviewers/Company Policies
I received a Google Ad for Brex as I was setting up my retail e-commerce business. I had already quickly set up a business bank, revolving credit account, and accounting software elsewhere (literally done in minutes), but was intrigued by the "all in one" advertising. I've filled out MANY bank account applications in my lifetime and never been denied. Despite carefully reading through EVERYTHING available on their website and finding my situation listed on their application, it was surprising to have my application denied because my e-commerce business is funded by angel investors instead of venture capitalists. What was more interesting was that it was only once I sent in my ID, that I received this notice of denial. Not during the automated application process, was not asked to see the promissory notes, hadn't uploaded any business bank statements yet. When I inquired why the advertising doesn't match the company policies, I was told that my account would be "risky". What's risky about making deposits and paying expenses?! A start-up doesn't have many transactions; seems rather safe actually. So, I have to assume that my gender, my geographical location, my assumed ethnicity, and/or assumptions about my projected income and expense habits were used in the immediate (not days, literally minutes) decision about my application (my ID wouldn't pass their AI, so had to send it to a live person who contacted me to pursue this application - I was planning to leave it unfinished). Considering Brex isn't an actual bank, and I've had zero trouble at real banks (having been in the financial industry for decades now, as a professional with multiple college degrees), I can only assume this is a cleverly disguised scam to make someone up the food chain money vs. offer legitimate benefits to small/medium business owners. I'm familiar with such ploys, which is why I always read the fine print. Trouble with this case is the fine print is ambiguous and they seem to have unpublished policies that don't revolve around customer service. If you're looking for ways to manage your small business money, look elsewhere. Do you really want someone to manage money like a bank, but not go the extra mile to operate with the same lawful regulations and documented policies? Upon further research I came across countless reviews (of competitors) that abscond with customer funds and not being a real bank, what can you actually do about that? Nothing... UPDATE: Again, after further review of Brex only reviews, found they have same issues I noted in several of their competitors. Brex immediately saw and responded to my review by asking for my name and number, after posting their generic "everyone should be heard" comment. There's nothing to remedy in my case. Even if there was some mistake, they decided to approve my application, I wouldn't proceed with opening an account, much less put $1 in their trust & care. Talk about risk, I have a duty to my investors NOT to risk their money by storing it in some fly-by-night operation! I'll just stick with Wells Fargo...it's not fancy, but it gets the job done.
