I’m not sure how the gentleman was using the hickory walking stick to get up from a chair, but I have a hickory and a sassafras walking stick, and they’re both about as sturdy as a baseball bat. I’m a big guy, and my sticks don’t bend an inch even when I lean on them with my full weight. They are exceptional walking aids, and I recommend them 100%.

Natural Hardwood Root Cane . This is a very nice looking stick but only gave it 4 stars because not as sturdy as described. The stick will bend if you use it to get up from low seat.
