Their insurance seems just OK, but holy crap is their service department for individual healthcare and absolute abomination. I've been back and forth on the phone with them for days about just canceling a plan that was already supposed to be cancelled. They agreed after I got a Covered CA manager on the phone with them. They were supposed to send me a refund and cancel the recurring bill. This was a recorded call by Covered CA. I check with them 2 weeks later and all of a sudden they said it's not up to them but instead Covered CA. I talked to both and Covered CA is waiting on paperwork from Anthem. They literally admitted wrongdoing and then decided against it afterwards, leaving me in an infinite limbo. Never get Anthem Blue Cross.

Completely useless
Used their insurance because it was provided by my company. HSA account got charged a fee every month for statements I have never received (been charged for 5 years)- not informed, never transparent. Found out the fee was for paper statement, followed instruction to switched to electronic, not allowed by the system to submit. Asked for help using secure email, no help given except for templated answer. Given a faulty email address for further support - mail was immediately returned. Terrible service. I cannot imagine getting them to help me in more tricky situations like claims etc. Worst company ever.

Infertility Coverage That Exists Only on Paper
The cost of infertility treatment is overwhelming. My wife and I are currently undergoing infertility treatment, and our insurance benefits state that up to $10,000 is covered for infertility care. However, when my doctor prescribed the required medications, every single one was denied by the insurance company.
The reason given was that my wife is able to produce eggs, so the medications are considered unnecessary. We were told that these medications would only be covered if my wife had cancer or another serious disease that prevented egg production. This is incredibly frustrating and discouraging. It feels like we are being told to wait until my wife develops a life-threatening illness before receiving appropriate infertility treatment.
Infertility is a serious medical condition with significant physical, emotional, and financial consequences. Denying medically recommended treatment under these circumstances is unreasonable and deeply disappointing.

Complete lack of customer service
Complete lack of customer service.
I tried to contact Anthem, they sent me to an AI thing. It couldn't do anything except route me to a human agent. I was left hanging there for 15-20 minutes before they disconnected me without notification. Thanks a ton, Anthem, you've finally mastered the art of preventing communication with your customers.
** Edit - I finally got through to customer support, 20 minute wait on a live chat. The rep could not solve my problem and refused to connect me to the department that would. That's a really interesting new way to tell a customer to go to hell.

Horrible Experience
My org moved over to Anthem, and we were supposed to be covered as of 1/1/2026. To date, we haven't received any plan information, and employees haven't been able to register via the app, so it's unlikely we've been processed. I've been on hold trying to figure out what's happening for over an hour.

Anti-Trans in Ohio! Now I am cured?
Anti-Trans in Ohio! Now I am cured?
Amazing how "open minded" these folks for Anthem BCBS MyCare Ohio are before you sign up. I called to confirm a few things before 1-01-26, my FORMER start date. I was told ON A RECORDED CALL (by me, as Ohio is 1 party only consent) the only way I could get help was to give my dead name (birth name) that Social Security has. My transgender sex could also not be changed, like WellCare of Ohio did. I told the reps that there are other ways to identify me... but was refused to be done. Even the rep who did the disenrollment for 1-01-26 coverage on 12-23-25 also misgendered me and was corrected a few times. The lady, on a recorded call, again... claimed she has Trans in her family. Odd how all haters use this exact phrase. I sent the recording to a case manager. Now, I am without health insurance, with good reason. I told Medicare after the call.... "I'm apparently cured of diabetes, seizure disorder, congenital heart issues, mental health issues, etc." I had to cancel all January 2026 appointments, in hopes that I find a single LGBTQAI2S+ friendly or supportive Medicare and Medicaid insurer. I told my case worker that my mental health is at stake. After all, I can't get meds now. Hmmmmm, abuse or meds? Which is more important?
I truly believe i have just cause to disenroll from them, according to the recording I made.
Medicare and Insurance provider complaints go nowhere. CMS no longer takes complaints on insurance, as they call themselves "no surprises hotline." I have tried many times to file greviances/complaints, with no positive results on ANY anti-trans Medical insurer.
FYI: HIPAA allows trans individuals to confirm their identity with various other methods, like DOB, SS#, email address... and some places use code words. You DO NOT need to give a birth or even a dead name! JUST WRONG!!!!!
Interesting how the US and Ohio Governments both pay these abusers to abuse citizens and the disabled. Congress needs to act on this!
