Most people don't know that your Anthem health insurance includes "emergency" medical services when traveling outside of the United States. Our 19-year old son was visiting Vietnam and, while crossing a street, was hit by a motorcycle, knocked unconscious and rushed to a nearby hospital. Anthem declined our $1,600 claim (and subsequent appeal) sighting the emergency services were not "pre-approved." How do you pre-approve an emergency situation like this? For me, it's not so much the money but the principle. Anthem refused to support us as one of their insured members.

I wish I could allocate zero stars
I wish I could allocate zero stars. Unfortunately, we have little choice in our area, and we chose Anthem. Their website is completely out of date, and finding a care team is almost impossible. The online and telephone help are both equally useless, and all they can do is the same as a consumer would do, i.e., search the inaccurate information that's on their website.
Example: 45 PCPs show up in my 10-mile radius. I've not yet found a single one who is real and available. On the flip side, when I went to my local facility to register with anyone available, they identified a doctor, but Anthem does not have them on their list, so I cannot assign them as my PCP.
Anthem also states that no referral is needed, but every provider I've spoken with says that they absolutely do need a referral if you want them to cover treatment.

HORRIBLE!!!!
HORRIBLE!!!!! After 10 years of refilling my prescriptions at Giant, this ridiculous company has decided it doesn't want to use them. The other pharmacies are very inconvenient! For the exuberant amount I pay for this horrible insurance, I should at least be able to choose where I get my prescriptions!!!!!

Disgusting
Disgusting, disreputable, despicable trash. And that’s a compliment to these scumbags. They lie, they cheat, and they steal money from you. And the people that work there are completely worthless idiots who couldn’t even get employed at Walmart. Absolute scum. Go anywhere else. They will lie to your face repeatedly and scam you out of everything they can. They are worthless disgusting vermin. And whatever you do, don’t trust their rewards program. It is a complete and total scam. I hope they get exactly what they deserve. And then some.

Refused to provide in-network providers complete list
I have attempted multiple times since January 2 to change my PCP. Kept being directed to online portal. The portal has almost nothing except payment options. I finally called customer service and had great difficulty getting any assistance. I requested in-network providers and was denied. I have requested a supervisor but now on hold for 20 mins and counting. One of the worst choices I made. Probably better off with no insurance!!

They need to be sued for hundreds of millions of dollars with no rate increases in 10 years to cover their payouts. They give paying customers the run around constantly, and literally lie with the information they give you. They tell you your insurance will be activated and it isn't. Paying massive out of pocket costs on medication and doctor visits after paying anthem. Insurance scammers as normal. My girlfriend is having emotional and physical damage to her body over this. Lies, lies. And more lies.

Anthem refused a procedure my Dr…
Anthem refused a procedure my Dr ordered and when I called and on hold for 27min that person could t help me and sent me to another dept and after being on hold there for 55minutes that person said the other person Was the correct dept. I called again only to be put on a Live Chat text but it wasn’t live, it was a bot, and at 5:30, after being on hold with the Bot (which was my 3rd call to Anthem) since 4:40 I realized no one’s coming back, it’s after 530, they just left me hanging. Anthem is all about the money, and refuses dr ordered procedures and no customer service.

HORRID!!!!
HORRID!!!!! I am 70 years old and have never in my life had a worse insurance company. (Or any company at all for that matter.) The worst of all is their so-called pharmacy, Carelon (which should be called NON-Carelon!). Do not count on getting your medications on time, do not count on getting them at all periodically. Count on being over-billed, ignored, and continual screwups. Count on directions not being read and/or ignored. Count on hours and hours and hours on the phone…with corrections STILL not being made. Count on being over-billed, billed for charges you do not owe, and on and on and on. This is the MOST INEPT company I have ever dealt with. I have put up with them and their predecessor pharmacy (Ingenio) for 2 years, and cannot WAIT to get rid of them!
Anthem itself does not care any more than Carelon and will ignore 90% of your attempts to communicate with them as well. Even if they do communicate with you, they will simply pass the buck to the pharmacy. I actually had to write to the CEO and 21 other higher-ups to get some kind of response...and yet, they STILL haven't corrected their errors despite promises to do so. Currently, they have overbilled me by $400; I am so sick and tired of dealing with them, I am not even going to try to get my $400 back... I just want to be done with them.
I will GLADLY pay more to an insurance company and pharmacy that actually know what they're doing and, at the very minimum, care enough to do their jobs right and correct their errors. I cannot WAIT to be rid of them forever!
(BTW, this form asks for the date of experience. Although I will fill in today's date, the date of experience is actually January 1, 2022 thru today, November 27, 2024. (And I have absolutely no doubt that it will continue through December 31, 2024.)
