Without TrueLink, my mother, who had dementia, would not have been able to live semi-independently for the last seven years of her life. Her True Link card offered everything we needed. The card could be linked to checking accounts that are held in trusts (most prepaid cards do not allow this); it could be completely controlled by the trustee or guardian; and it could be set up with incredible specificity. For instance, we limited her transactions to $300 for a single transaction, except at Costco, where she used the pharmacy and so needed to be able to spend more than $300. She could not make donations to charity but she could pay library fines, which it turns out are considered a charity (who knew?) She could not pay contractors or wire money, so was safe from common scams. I set up the card so that I would receive a text every time she spent more than $75 on something, which was a great way to ensure no one was ripping her off. Finally, I set up the card so that every time the balance dropped below "x", "y" hundreds of dollars would automatically be transferred into her account. I've read some of the low ratings on this site, and it seems that those folks for some reason did not utilize the auto-transfer feature. By using auto-transfer, my mother always had all the money she needed for groceries, outings with her caretakers, restaurant meals, doctor co-pays, and clothes shopping. She could even use it to order from QVC. Finally, the only two times I had an issue (my mom lost her card once and I needed to close the account when my mom passed away) I received prompt, compassionate, extremely helpful service. Thank you, True Link, for giving my mother the freedom to live at home until the end.
