Using Brandon’s process, everything in my counteroffer was based on research, so I wasn’t throwing out arbitrary numbers, which made me feel confident in my counteroffer as well as in the impression I would give to people I’ll be working with. Perhaps more important than the money, this was the first time my future colleagues got to see my work firsthand in real time, and being a competent negotiator gave me the opportunity to display important attributes, such as flexibility and advocating for myself while maintaining positive relationships.
