WARNING: Do not trust Tajima Direct with your personal frames. I sent them a pristine $600 TAG Heuer frame for lenses. Their lab wasn't confident but forced it anyway, completely snapping the solid structural frame chassis in half. They then tried to hide behind a liability waiver to avoid paying for the property they destroyed. I have filed official fraud and property damage complaints with the California State Attorney General and the BBB. Avoid this company at all costs unless you want your expensive glasses ruined.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. This order involved a discontinued customer-supplied frame that arrived with a cracked original lens. Before any work began, we told the customer in writing that the original lenses could not be removed without breaking them, and that a secure fit could not be guaranteed, and that we would cancel the order, refund it in full and return the frame untouched if he preferred. He asked us in writing to proceed despite the risks presented. The new lenses were fitted, the frame was inspected before shipping, and it shipped intact. When he reported several days after delivery that a temple had come apart at the hinge, we offered a free inspection and repair if we could, or to make new lenses for another frame, and ultimately at his request, we refunded the full amount he originally paid for the new lenses. We take great care with every frame that comes through our lab and contact customers promptly if we have any concern about a frame or if anything happens to it while it is with us.

Thought this company was going to be a…
Thought this company was going to be a good solution for my Maui Jim sunglasses that I had cracked the lens on. Upon sending to them they then cracked the frame and said sorry but that’s in our policy that it could happened. Now have broken lens and broken frames and they offered 50% off a future purchase. Thats not even close to good customer service. Be aware.

Jeffrey, we're sorry this experience left you frustrated. Some context for anyone reading: the frame in question was a Maui Jim Hoku, a style that was discontinued over a decade ago. It's an old frame style that becomes brittle with age. When our technicians went to remove the original lens, the frame cracked under minimal pressure — and they also found a second crack already forming on the opposite side of the frame, indicating it was at the end of its structural life. Our technicians take great care with every frame and flag visible signs of elevated risk, but this kind of internal brittleness isn't always detectable before disassembly. We gave you two options: transfer the lens order into any other frame you'd like to send in at no additional cost, or receive a full refund. We also sourced replacement frame options in case you were interested. You opted for the refund, which we promptly processed. Our Working With Used Frames policy, linked in the footer of every page of our site and described in detail on our refund policy page as well, addresses the inherent risks of working with used and aging frames — which can become prone to damage with very little force over time with no outward signs. This is the industry standard among lens replacement services: no liability for damage to used frames during lens replacement.

Scratch resistant coating is not very…
Scratch resistant coating is not very scratch resistant. Developed a bad scratch in the first 2 weeks when I was extremely careful after spending $500 and waited 2 + weeks for these lenses. I’ll find someone local with a replacement plan next time. Severely disappointed. Don’t waste your time and buy into the hype.
*edit* Order Completed: August 28th Lenses received Sept 16 .Either way, it is better to go local and get better service. Also, you ever think there could be an issue/defect with the protective coating? Apparently not. Terrible product.
Response from Tajima DirectSep 30, 2025
Phillip, we’re sorry to hear you’re disappointed. For your order we used Trivex® lens material — the most scratch-resistant lens material offered in Transitions® — paired with premium anti-scratch coatings. Together, this makes them the most durable and scratch-resistant prescription Transitions® lenses available today. While no lenses can ever be fully scratch-proof, scratches come from something abrasive rubbing on the lens surface. That said, we offered a special one-time heavily discounted remake as a goodwill gesture to try to help.
For clarity, your order was also completed and shipped within our standard 7–10 business day turnaround for prescription lens replacements, which is the timeline we advertise.

Expensive Custom Lenses Fail
I ordered some custom lenses from Tajima Direct. I gave Jacob, co-founder and president, a brief written explanation containing two key details of what I wanted to achieve with the custom lenses. He told me he understood, so I paid $275 to have them produce the lenses. What I received did not match what I requested.
Instead of acknowledging that what they produced was not what I ordered, Jacob repeatedly insisted that either they did produce what I ordered and/or my expectations were unrealistic. (I’m not sure how both those things can be true.) The simple reality is that the lenses they produced were not as dark as I asked them for. I don’t think they did it on purpose. I think they decided they knew what I wanted and overlooked one of the two key details in my written description.
Jacob refused to acknowledge this error and did not offer a refund. However, he DID offer me the opportunity to pay them additional money to attempt to make the lenses again. Now, after his repeated insistence that they did it right the first time (shouldn’t I be the judge of that?) and/or what I ordered was unreasonable (and therefore impossible to achieve?), why would I ever throw more money at them?
Maybe they have produced excellent custom lenses for other people, but they did not for me. They refused to acknowledge their mistake, and the customer service they provided amounted to telling me I was wrong and/or unreasonable. This seems like an unconventional approach to dealing with customers but maybe it’s working out for them – after all, he does still have my money and I don’t have the lenses I described.
UPDATE - Jacob’s response to this review further illustrates my point. My instructions to him (also in writing) were “the tint of the midline of the lenses should match (or be slightly darker than) the tint of my current lenses. So, obviously with the gradient, the top would be darker and bottom lighter.” I think the content of his response reveals that he focused only on making a gradient and overlooked how dark I wanted the lenses to be. Further, he has no interest in acknowledging that reality and certainly has no interest in fixing it. He did not carefully review the parameters of my request before putting these lenses into production. That’s his fault, not mine — but I am the one who paid for it. So, just be aware: If you, the customer, does not believe the lenses you received match what you described, you are wrong and you just have to eat it.

Mike, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re sorry to hear you’re disappointed. Custom gradient tinting is a very specialized, artistic process, and while we always aim to execute exactly as described, there is inevitably some subjectivity in how the result is perceived under different lighting conditions.
For clarity, before production we confirmed in writing:
“match the existing color as closely as we can, but turn it into a gradient with it being darker than the originals on the top and lighter on the bottom. If that sounds right, here’s a link to order.”
We also made clear at that stage that “all custom tinted lenses like this are final sale.” We documented the lenses at final inspection with photos showing the darker top, lighter bottom, and mid-zone match. While the platform doesn’t allow us to post images here, we do have that visual proof on file.
That is what we produced, and I personally reviewed the lenses before shipment and thought they came out beautifully. Because these lenses were a custom, final-sale order, we could not offer a refund, but we did offer to remake them at our internal cost (50% off) as a courtesy. We corresponded extensively on this order — about eight back-and-forth emails — your last note stated you had no interest in going forward with a remake and that we should go our separate ways. At that point, we understood there was nothing further to reply to.
We regret that the result wasn’t what you had envisioned, but we do stand by the craftsmanship and care put into your order. We’ve produced thousands of custom tinted lenses for customers who are thrilled with the results, and we’ll continue to do our very best to deliver excellent work for anyone who trusts us with their frames.

Horrible product
Horrible product! Please dont buy this product. This is a subpar product.
And good luck getting a refund. They will tell you the imperfections are normal. So I am still fighting to get a refund.
They will tell you should just get used to them. I wouldn't even give them one star if it wasn't required.

Hi Tammy,
The issues you told us about the product are not actually issues at all. We attempted to explain it to you, and provided you with a prepaid return shipping label along with instructions for how to send them back to us for a full refund as soon as you asked. There's nothing more we can do for you here except try to provide our decades of eyewear knowledge to inform you why the issues you referenced are not in fact issues at all, and then provide you with complete return / refund information as soon as you asked. However, we can't refund you until you return the product.
Respectfully,
Jacob

Poor experience with Tajima replacement lenses
Purchased replacement lenses from Tajima for a pair of Maui Jim stingray sunglasses. The right lens fitperfectly The left lens was obviously mismade or the wrong lens. I asked Jacob the Ceo to send me a new lens . He refused and said I have to send my sunglasses and lenses to him. He refused to send me a new lens. Ultimately I reshaped the lense properly with a dremel tool and was able to insert in the sunglasses. I would never buy from them again and I would encourage all to waryof this conpany.

Very rude Web site customer service representative named Steve.
I want to start by saying that I've been in customer service for over 30 years.
After doing a google search on replacement sunglass lenses I went to Tajima-Direct website and saw my replacement lenses listed at $95. Immediately after pulling up that info a customer service Rep named "Steve" came on and began a text message asking if I had a question or needed help. This was my first time on this companies web site. I had only been on the site less than a few minutes and knew little more than the price of my replacement lenses. I could also see in the picture of the lenses that Tajima was embossed on one of them instead of Rayban. The price was more than double of other sites selling my replacement lenses and I had never heard of Tajima. To me this immediately begged the question that I thought to ask. That question being, "Why would I pay $95 for lenses that weren't genuine Rayban especially when they have another companies logo embossed on them." Call me crazy but that doesn't seem rude or unusual. It also gives the rep a chance to do his job and sell his companies product. He responded "Our lenses are far superior to Raybans. If you preference is to have the original logo over a higher quality lens shop somewhere else and buy fake lenses". He didn't say why their lenses were better, instead he became rude and defensive. I replied by texting "No fakes for me. I suggest the next time that question is asked you should respond by telling the person asking the question why your companies lenses are far superior instead of suggesting they shop somewhere else and buy fake lenses." He replied by texting " There is extensive info on our web site about why our lenses are better and next time you ask a question be nice." I responded that I had been nice and simply asked a question. I then added that he was rude. Immediately after my last reply stating that he had been rude he exited the message text screen before I could get a screen shot of it.
Based on this upsetting text interaction I will never buy from or recommend this company to anyone. Steve demonstrated very poor customer service and company representation. When a customer asks a question a representative should never respond in a defensive manner and suggest that they should instead purchase fake lenses somewhere else! That is an unbelievably poor representation of a company touting a supposedly superior product. It was also appallingly crass and out of line to talk down to a perspective customer by suggesting that my question was unkind! Very poorly trained and obviously unsupervised interactions on this companies site.
Based on this negative interaction, I would hope that this company reaches out to me in an effort to make things right...... As of now, this experience raised very large red flags about the company and it's products!!! Unless this gets resolved I suggest that people STAY AWAY from Tajima Direct! I will update my review if Tajima Direct does reach out with a suitable resolution to this upsetting experience.
The reply below is very bad. Your apology is insincere. You apologize and then go on to defend your rep and everything he said. Saying that you are sorry if it came off as being rude or unkind. You support your rep telling a perspective customer that he was not "nice" when he asked a simple question. You never once address the fact that he texted that rude statement. A lack of addressing this is tacit approval of that rude statement. Also, he wasn't merely suggesting that if I shopped somewhere else that I would take a chance of buying fake lenses. He made a rude and defensive statement due to a lack of leadership and proper customer service training, much akin to the reply you sent.
Again, horrible follow up with a reply basically defending this individuals poor and rude service. Inferring that my impression was ill founded and mistaken. It was neither and I resent the insincere "politely worded" apology which rings with sarcasm.
With this poor reply your company has just sunk a level lower. If I were in charge I'd sent you both to several training seminars on customer service.

Hi Matthew,
We're very sorry to hear about this experience on our live chat. We strive for very positive, transparent, and helpful information for our live chat with customers and would never be OK with a customer service representative calling out a customer. In this case, our representative tried to let you know that the reason our product is priced higher is because we offer a superior polarized lens. You asked about the logo and he let you know that there are many places online that sell replacements with the logos that are not genuine Ray Ban lenses. I really apologize that this came off as rude and unkind as opposed to just trying to provide you with more information you may not have known prior. Please note we did not in any way suggest that you buy a fake pair of lenses online, he only gave you the information that there are many other replacement lenses claiming to be real that are actually fakes.
We hope we can have the opportunity to make things right for you and have already reached out separately as well.
Thank you,
Tajima Direct
