Had a bad experience with SDCCU. The loan processor (Joshua Munoz) was short and unhelpful, and rushed through to get me off the phone...you can tell in his voice he was totally disingenuous, don't recommend working with them ever.

Six weeks of document production on a…
Six weeks of document production on a loan that was impossible from day one. They had the rule. They didn't tell me until week six.
I applied to SDCCU in July 2026 for a pre-approval on an $1,800,000 home purchase. After 42 days, they approved me for $1,460,008 — nineteen percent below what I applied for, and the lowest number of the five lenders who reviewed the identical file.
The reason: any loan above $1,000,000 requires 12 months of cash reserves. Always. No exceptions.
I was not told this until August 19 — six weeks after I first asked.
On July 14, before my first call, I sent my loan officer written questions because I was comparing lenders and wanted to understand requirements precisely. One question was how many months of reserves they require. The written answer: "typically 6 to 12 months, depending on the loan program, overall financial strength, and underwriting review."
That answer was not accurate for my loan size, and it was the only thing that mattered.
What I did in those six weeks, for nothing:
Authorized a hard credit inquiry. Made two separate in-person trips to their branch — one for me, one for my wife — because they will not begin underwriting until you open accounts with them. Submitted W-2s, two years of tax returns, paystubs, bank statements, brokerage statements, 401(k) statements and plan documents, two written letters of explanation, and nineteen individual stock plan release confirmations that I had to download and organize one at a time.
The communication was worse than the outcome.
Two scheduled calls were missed — one ten minutes late, one never happened at all, leaving my wife waiting. At one point I went seven days with no response after three emails and two voicemails. My file sat in underwriting for thirteen days with no status update. I had no way to know whether something was pending on my end or whether it was simply sitting untouched.
Compare this to another San Diego credit union.
Mission Federal reviewed the same income, the same assets, the same credit — and issued a fully underwritten approval at $1,800,000 in eight days. Same 5.375% rate. Same 5/5 ARM product. Six-month reserve requirement instead of twelve. Their loan officer answered emails on evenings and weekends.
Three other lenders also approved between $1.75M and $1.9M.
Five underwriters looked at the same file. Four got to $1.75M or above. SDCCU took five times as long and came in lowest. That is not a credit profile problem. That is a disclosure problem.
I escalated to a manager and then to a Senior Vice President. The SVP acknowledged that disclosure "could be more specific" and that communication "could be better," then defended the rest of the process. There was no apparent recognition that six weeks of a buyer's time had been wasted on an application that could never have worked.
If you are shopping a jumbo loan here, ask this before you authorize anything: "At exactly what loan amount does your reserve requirement become a fixed 12 months, and does it apply to both properties if I'm buying before selling?" Get it in writing.
Their published rates look excellent. That's precisely what makes this worth writing — the rates get you in the door, and then the process costs you six weeks you may not have.

They have a scam going where they withhold funds deposited, then charge $36 for NSF fees! Also, they have not taken fraudulent charges off the debit card while overseas. Instead, they cancelled the debit card against specific instructions, and would not mail a replacement card to me overseas. So I was 7 months without an ATM card while abroad. Avoid them like the plague.

Customers of SDCCU for years - service is now impersonal. We've moved to Chase.
We've been customers of SDCCU for decades, with (at one point) over $500K in various accounts. In earlier years, their personal service and willingness to go above and beyond kept us there. Now, their customer service is impersonal, and any benefits are not enough to keep us there. We have moved to Chase, and we are now getting the service we came to expect. I recommend others do the same.

SDCCU Acts in Bad Faith — Hiding Behind Incompetent Counsel
San Diego County Credit Union has demonstrated repeated bad faith in their handling of my account. They misclassified my checking account as a credit account and even applied rolling delinquencies after closure, which is legally impossible.
To “justify” this, they produced documents about debit card authorizations and fee schedules, claiming these prove a credit account — documents that do not support their reporting and are misleading.
Even more concerning, they hired outside counsel to defend their actions, yet that attorney is relying on facts that don’t exist in the same universe. Instead of correcting errors, SDCCU hides behind their lawyer, acting as if they are above the law. They even previously agreed to a pay-for-delete arrangement, then later pretended it never existed.
This is a clear example of a financial institution misleading customers and regulators while attempting to evade accountability. If you value truthful reporting and ethical treatment, avoid SDCCU at all costs.

Don't waste your time!
Don't waste your time with this place! I am sorry I applied for an account as I just received a rejection letter. I didn't know SDCCU had such high standards of who could have an account. I make a good income, lived in SD for a decade, etc. and got rejected! SDCCU thinks it's a country club or something. So many bad reviews for this credit union so it must have terrible management. I've banked at a corporate bank for 15 years with no issues but SDCCU is nearby. I guess SDCCU doesn't think someone may want a mortgage or other products from them at some point Apparently I'm just not good enough. Sad someone who has a lot of positives can't get a measly checking account. VERY JUDGMENTAL place. How does this place even stay in business???
