Not sure if I choose the correct company for my angel. Not one of your representatives called after the policy was made . What a shame .

I've had insurance coverage with Pumpkin for almost a year, and while the policy looks comprehensive on paper, my actual experience has been frustrating and extremely disappointing.
My biggest issue has been Pumpkin’s denial of a claim for what they labeled a “pre-existing condition.” My dog was seen by her veterinarian for a respiratory issue and underwent diagnostic testing to determine the cause. Although she had experienced a similar respiratory issue in the past, that issue had fully resolved on its own. According to my policy, any condition that has been cured and free of symptoms or treatment for 180 days should not be considered pre-existing, and my dog clearly met that requirement.
Despite this, Pumpkin denied the claim. I was told I could appeal the decision and that my veterinarian could clarify in the medical records that the prior respiratory issue had resolved. I did exactly that and submitted an appeal with updated clinic notes. The appeal was denied anyway. Pumpkin completely ignored both my explanation and my vet’s updated notes and continued to rely on outdated records.
I attempted to submit a second appeal, which Pumpkin initially refused to accept. At that point, I contacted the California Department of Insurance for assistance. This prompted Pumpkin to conduct a third review, but the outcome was the same. Once again, they ignored the facts, my statements, and my veterinarian’s updated clinical notes, and continued to deny the claim based on the same old information.
This entire process was exhausting, stressful, and incredibly discouraging. It has left me worried that my dog will not receive the coverage she needs if other health issues arise in the future.
My second major issue is the outrageous renewal increase. My premium is going up by 59%. This kind of increase is unreasonable—especially when Pumpkin has already shown they are unwilling to cover significant health issues. At this point, I am seriously questioning whether it’s worth continuing my policy with them.
Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied and would not consider myself a happy customer.

Hi Theresa. We definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage
As with all pet insurance, our rates will increase from time-to-time. The rates for pet insurance are determined by factors such as breed, age, gender, species, and average veterinary costs over time. This ensures a fair and accurate calculation of your premium. For instance, certain breeds may be more susceptible to hereditary or congenital conditions, and the probability of medical problems increases with age.
Moreover, the geographic region also affects the cost of premiums. The average usage and expenses of veterinary care in the United States are considered, including veterinary inflation due to equipment improvements, medication, and other factors. Like home or auto insurance, your premiums are influenced by factors specific to your region (zip code), which could cause them to be higher or lower than those of your friends or family in different areas.
At this time any rates provided are the most competitive price available given current policy terms and are heavily regulated by your states Department of Insurance.
If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.

I’m extremely disappointed with Pumpkin…
I’I’m extremely disappointed with Pumpkin Pet Insurance and would not
recommend them to other pet owners.
I brought my cat to the vet after he threw up one time. My vet performed blood work, monitored him, and cleared him — nothing serious or chronic was found. One time.
My cat threw up several times and became dehydrated. We had to take him to emergency room after seeing his vet to get fluids. Despite this, Pumpkin denied the entire claim, stating that the issue was considered a pre-existing
condition.
This is extremely frustrating because my cat was evaluated by a
licensed veterinarian and medically cleared with no ongoing condition, yet Pumpkin still refused coverage. If a single incident of vomiting
can be twisted into a reason to deny legitimate care, then what are you really paying for?
I get pet insurance for peace of mind, not to fight over basic emergency care when something unexpected happens. Instead of support
during a stressful moment with my pet, I was left dealing with paperwork, excuses, and a denial.
Save your money and look elsewhere — when it actually matters, they won’t be there for you

No response or pay, to the vet on Tuesday October 28th…
Went to the vet on Tuesday October 28th and submitted the paperwork later that day, I called Wednesday to see what is going on. I was told I would have my money in 15 minutes. I do understand that sometime it may take a little longer the first time but I have heard anything but these survey. I should get paid just as quick and as many time as I received surveys.
I have not heard anything, if I need to summit more information or anything.
I am very disappointed with this process.

Hi MaryAnn! Our claims team is working hard to complete insurance claims as quickly as possible. Some claims can be processed immediately on review, or may be eligible for processing through PumpkinNow.
PumpkinNow is an urgent pay service from Pumpkin Pet Insurance designed to expedite claims and estimates for ‘critical care’ (I.e., high-cost and/or urgent or emergency veterinary treatment). It provides fast-track processing and payment of insurance claims when treatment is likely to exceed $1,000. However, for claims for pets new to Pumpkin or for new issues, the processing time can be a bit longer as we collect medical records and review supporting documents available, like your pet's full medical history. A high volume of claim submissions can also impact processing times.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to our customer service team if you have any questions or to check if any additional information may be needed to process your pet’s claim.

Insane renewal rates- 25% increase
The coverage looks good but after having this for only a year, we received a renewal for over 25% increase per month. My dog is very healthy and six years old.
Never had to file a claim, but moving to just using a savings account versus shelling out $1289 a year in premiums and still handle a $1k deductible.
