It says that you accept predisposed conditions. I sent in a copy of the estimate that we got for my dog from the vet. My dog has an ear infection and needs her teeth cleaned but they need to put her under anesthesia to do it. But, you denied the claim. I even picked the better plan and it still got denied.

Hi Tonya, we definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage. If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.

GO ELSEWHERE!!!
HORRIBLE...good luck on getting your claims paid.
My extremely healthy 4-year-old boxer was SEVERELY lethargic, so, I took him to the Urgent Vet for Pet clinic (open and close to my home), because his lethargy was FAR from normal
The Vet wanted to rule-out dehydration, possible reaction to Simparica Trio (which he's been on for years and had no issue), or potential cardiac issue.
They concurred his lethargy was abnormal for a dog, and took chest x-rays, labs and followed up with 500ml IV fluid, Dexamethasone and Zofran. He was better within minutes of walking out of the clinic that I had to carry him into and acting about 80% normal, but still not quite himself.
I followed up with his Vet the next day and they gave him another 500ml of IV fluid. He was back to himself the following day.
I am now having to fight the claims adjuster to be properly compensated. Once through this debacle, I'll be switching to Spot, or Embrace (FORBES Top 2).
Pre and post pics below.
Good luck, Ken
Adding to this.
They talked me into staying...BIG MISTAKE!!!
Moab was being worked up for cardiomyopathy (ARVC, which is unfortunately common in Boxers). Pumpkin denied the claim ($1,300) citing 'pre-existing' condition.
I e-mailed them on 11 APR 2026 asking to explain the 'pre-existing' condition and today, 11 days later, nothing.
Save yourself time and just put aside money ($100-$200/month) and handle this yourself as Pumpkin is obviously only out for the money and doesn't truly care about the consumer.
I'm filing a complaint with the BBB, Writing the Depart of Insurance (NY, VA, and NC), and contacting the underwriters directly (IAIC, and USFIC).
E-Mail I sent on 02MAY2026:
Cancel my policy immediately!!!
No pre-existing condition existed
You couldn't even reply to my e-mail asking to explain why you declined to pay for his cardiac work-up or cite what pre-existing condition existed
E-mail sent 11 days ago (11 APR 2026) asking for an explanation and unprofessionally no one replied
As one who takes services I pay for very seriously, I am:
Providing an honest Google review
Filing a complaint with the BBB
Writing the Depart of Insurance (NY, VA, and NC)
Contacting the underwriters directly (IAIC, and USFIC)

Horrible service.
We had the worst experience ever with this company. Our first claim that we filed with them was pending for over 1.5 months. I had to call them to look at it. Recently my second claim has been denied without any reason. It was for a hot spot well within the coverage. Their support link on the website is broken and they just sent me an email notifying me of an 18% increase in premium. We have not had any claims with them yet not even met our deductible. So this is just a little random increase. Overall, stay away from this company. Failed me on multiple levels.
Response from Pumpkin Pet InsuranceMay 5, 2026
Hi Ankur, we are currently experiencing a high volume of claim submissions which is impacting our processing time. Rest assured our claims team is working diligently to process these for all of our pet parents as quickly as possible!
Please keep in mind that your pet's first accident/illness claim typically takes longer, since we need to reach out to any prior vets to collect medical records.
Additionally, like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. After two years of paying my monthly…
After two years of paying my monthly premiums on time and submitting no claims, Pumpkin decided to more than double my premiums. As such, I dropped them. Do not support this company; they are in it for the money.
Response from Pumpkin Pet InsuranceMay 5, 2026
Hi Erik, we completely understand your frustration around rate increases. As with all pet insurance, our rates will increase from time-to-time. The rates for pet insurance are determined by factors such as breed, age, gender, species, and average veterinary costs over time. This ensures a fair and accurate calculation of your premium. For instance, certain breeds may be more susceptible to hereditary or congenital conditions, and the probability of medical problems increases with age.
Moreover, the geographic region also affects the cost of premiums. The average usage and expenses of veterinary care in the United States are considered, including veterinary inflation due to equipment improvements, medication, and other factors. Like home or auto insurance, your premiums are influenced by factors specific to your region (zip code), which could cause them to be higher or lower than those of your friends or family in different areas.

I am very displeased with my service of…
I am very displeased with my service of pumpkin as a consumer. First of all I was misled greatly when choosing a plan and deciding to use pumpkin for my pets insurance. I was essentially told whatever I wanted to hear, just to get the sale.
I was told claims are processed within in 5 business days, both of my claims took 2-3 weeks.
Out of both of those claims I paid $1000.00 to providers, pumpkin covered $0.00.
Pumpkin used a blanket term of “pre-existing” their favorite term because it automatically makes they pay their consumers nothing. I was told since my pets condition had been dormant,
It would be grandfathered in and covered, yet surprise, surprise, that’s not at all what happened.
Not to mention the second claim had absolutely zero to do with his “pre-existing” condition.
I am a sick and disabled veteran and don’t have the energy to call and deal with this, but shame on you pumpkin and your corporate greed. At the end of the day, I’m just another $160 a month to you, and it’s very disappointing you are doing this to your customers.

This has been one of the most… Frustrating experiences
This has been one of the most frustrating insurance experiences I’ve ever had. What should be a straightforward claim has turned into an endless cycle of document requests with no clear explanation of why each additional record is needed.
It feels like the process is designed to delay decisions rather than actually evaluate claims fairly. Every time something is submitted, another request follows. There’s no transparency, no clear timeline, and no sense that the customer is being supported.
When you’re dealing with your pet’s health, the last thing you need is added stress from an insurance company that makes the process this difficult.
Very disappointing experience overall.
Response from Pumpkin Pet InsuranceApr 27, 2026
Hi Nicholas, our claims team is working hard to complete insurance claims as quickly as possible. It is our goal to review your claim within 5 business days of receipt. Some claims can be processed immediately on review, but for claims for pets new to Pumpkin or for new issues, the processing time can be a bit longer as we collect medical records and review supporting documents available, like your pet's full medical history. A high volume of claim submissions can also impact processing times. If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.
