Hi Casey, we definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage.

Thank you for your feedback. As with most pet insurance, we have some exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions. These are conditions that occur before coverage begins or during a waiting period. With our plan, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future. An injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered. Other exclusions include elective cosmetic & dental services and breeding-related costs.

Like most pet insurance, our plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions – anything your pet showed signs of or was treated for before signing up or during the waiting period. Here’s where Pumpkin does things differently: not all pre-existing conditions are off the table forever. If an illness or injury is curable (think swallowed toy or kennel cough) and your pet fully recovers with no symptoms or treatment for 180 days, we could cover it if it comes back. The one exception is knee and ligament conditions. Is it still worth signing up? We think so. 45% of Pumpkin parents use their plan in the first year, and you could start getting up to 90% of eligible vet bills covered for new conditions in 14 days or less, depending on your state. [Plus, if you add our optional wellness package (not insurance), you could get refunds for routine care like yearly check-ups & vaccines on day one.]
