Read the Fine Print: Long Hold Times, Confusing Cancellation Terms, and No Easy Way to Remove Your Payment Information
I signed up for Pumpkin hoping it would provide peace of mind for my pet, but after my experience, I decided to cancel my policy. One thing that surprised me was the way the Preventive Essentials add-on works. I made all of my monthly payments on time, yet after canceling I received a bill for an additional $65.10. After reviewing the policy, I learned that because I had used preventive benefits early in the plan year, I was responsible for repaying the difference between the preventive benefits Pumpkin paid ($95.00) and the Preventive Essentials fees I had paid ($29.90). While this may be included in the contract, I do not believe it is explained clearly enough during enrollment. I think many customers would reasonably assume that making their monthly payments means they have already paid for those preventive services. Customer service was another major disappointment. I spent over 38 minutes on hold just to speak with a representative about my account. Long wait times like that are unacceptable when customers need assistance with billing or cancellation questions. Another issue that concerned me involved my payment information. After canceling my policy, I asked to have my debit card removed from my account. I was told by the representative that customer service could not remove it and that, for auditing purposes, payment cards are generally not removed unless the card belongs to someone else. I was also told that one option was to replace my active card with an expired card, which I found to be an unreasonable solution. I requested that this policy be provided to me in writing because I wanted clarification. I believe customers should be able to remove their own payment methods after canceling a service without relying on a manual process or waiting for another department. Prospective customers should also understand how the insurance works. Pumpkin generally does not pay your veterinarian directly. In most cases, you pay the veterinary bill out of pocket first, submit a claim, and then wait for reimbursement if the claim is covered under your policy. In addition, routine wellness services such as vaccines are generally not covered under the standard accident and illness policy unless you purchase the separate Preventive Essentials add-on. For my own financial situation, I have concluded that I would rather place money into a dedicated pet emergency savings account or use a credit card for unexpected veterinary expenses than continue paying for this type of insurance. That approach gives me greater flexibility and avoids the unexpected costs and limitations I experienced. My review reflects my personal experience. I hope Pumpkin improves its transparency regarding Preventive Essentials, significantly reduces customer service wait times, clearly explains cancellation consequences before enrollment, and gives customers direct control over removing their payment information after cancellation.
