Pumpkin has been a pretty good insure for our pet up until this last month. Monthly bill increased from from approximately $72 to 105. This is a 48% increase in rate. When I call and spoke to a pumpkin representative, they tried to say that the state of California is forcing them to do this. However, the new law gives him the option to increase the amount between 7 and 56%. Pumpkin is the one choosing to gouge their customers. Actively looking for another pet insurance company.

The company is taking forever to…
The company is taking forever to approve my claims. They approved claims that I recently submitted but still have not approved claims from previous appointments.
Response from Pumpkin Pet InsuranceJun 1, 2026
Thanks for your feedback, Brittany! Our claims team is working hard to complete insurance claims as quickly as possible. It is our goal to review your claim within 5 business days of receipt. Some claims can be processed immediately on review, but for claims for pets new to Pumpkin or for new issues, the processing time can be a bit longer as we collect medical records and review supporting documents available, like your pet's full medical history. A high volume of claim submissions can also impact processing times.
Thanks again for your patience and for being part of the Pumpkin Pack!

Too many restrictions, not transparent about deductible
The company did not disclose the deductible in the initial plan information and automatically renewed my pet without my consent. They also disallowed a condition that was under review but had not been finally confirmed (as pre-existing) and didn't cover enough vaccines and wellness services.

I got my 8 week old corgi puppy early…
I got my 8 week old corgi puppy early September. When we took her to the vet for shots we mentioned (as new corgi parents) that she had diarrhea one time and vomited another in the multiple week span we have owned her.
3 months later in December she contracted Parvo. We paid for it and sent a claim to Pumpkin. However Pumpkin denied my coverage because they said the Parvo was a PRE-Existing condition! They said since my dog threw up once and pooped in September that these new Bloody poops were pre-existing.
I could not believe it, all these reviews praising Pumpkin made me believe that this was different from other money grab insurances, but they were all wrong. Now I have to file an appeal, and file a complaint with the state.
BE CAREFUL! They will do whatever they can to not pay you
Edit: Saw the response and wanted to let you know that my appeal was overturned in my favor. So while you claim pre-existing, note that you were wrong. The original person who denied my claim was wrong. Parvo was not pre-existing because my dog pooped 3 months ago.

Hi Jacob, We definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage. If you need any further assistance, you can reach our care team by phone or chat during business hours, or email us anytime.

Very disappointed because we have only had insurance a few months and already have an increase in payments!
Very disappointed because we have only been with Pumpkin a few months with our dog Samson and we have not filed any claims that would warrant payout but our insurance has increased which is forcing me to look for another carrier.

Hi Rhonda. We completely understand your frustration around rate increases. As with all pet insurance, our rates will increase from time-to-time. The rates for pet insurance are determined by factors such as breed, age, gender, species, and average veterinary costs over time. This ensures a fair and accurate calculation of your premium. For instance, certain breeds may be more susceptible to hereditary or congenital conditions, and the probability of medical problems increases with age.
Moreover, the geographic region also affects the cost of premiums. The average usage and expenses of veterinary care in the United States are considered, including veterinary inflation due to equipment improvements, medication, and other factors. Like home or auto insurance, your premiums are influenced by factors specific to your region (zip code), which could cause them to be higher or lower than those of your friends or family in different areas.
At this time any rates provided are the most competitive price available, given current policy terms and are heavily regulated by your states Department of Insurance. If you would like to potentially lower costs, please reach out to us to discuss options which may include changes to your deductible, annual limits, or reimbursement rates. The only way to make changes to the cost of an insurance product would be to make changes to your plan.

I gave a 5 star not long ago
I gave a 5 star not long ago, but then renewal came and they want an additional 60 dollars a month. Price hike out of control. When I started with this company for both of my cats it was less than 130 a month. Now they want 216. I understand with aging comes increase, but 99 a month for a cat is insane, what will it be when he's 16.

I purchased my pet insurance in good…
I purchased my pet insurance in good faith. Submitted a claim that said I would receive my reimbursement within 5 days. It’s been over two weeks. I asked about it and was told they needed a medical history. All I took my pet in for was vaccinations that were needed. No medical history of illness just needed his shots to protect him. Still never received payment…
