Thank you for the feedback and we are so sorry for any frustration or confusion! As with most pet insurance, we have some exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions. These are conditions that occur before coverage begins or during a waiting period. With our plan, this doesn’t mean the condition can’t be covered in the future. A curable injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions.

Some claims can be processed immediately on review, but for claims for pets new to Pumpkin or for new issues, the processing time can be a bit longer as we collect medical records and review supporting documents available, like your pet's full medical history. A high volume of claim submissions can also impact processing times. We definitely understand it can be frustrating when a claim is not approved. Like most providers, we do not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means that if something occurs, or was showing signs or symptoms prior to enrollment or during the waiting period, it would not be eligible for coverage. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. Once a claim is filed, it is then processed by a Pumpkin claims team member, all of which have a veterinary medical background. Our claims team uses medical records and documentation provided by your veterinarian in order to determine coverage eligibility. Keep in mind that while we may not be able to offer coverage for pre-existing issues, new unrelated accidents or illnesses may be eligible for coverage. The average usage and expenses of veterinary care in the United States are considered, including veterinary inflation due to equipment improvements, medication, and other factors. Like home or auto insurance, your premiums are influenced by factors specific to your region (zip code), which could cause them to be higher or lower than those of your friends or family in different areas.
