Terrible for Central Florida
Over the past 12-14 months, I have purchased several dozen different types of flowering perennial garden plants from Proven Winners--I acquired about 30% from a reliable local privately-owned (not a box store) garden center, while the remainder I have purchased directly from Proven Winners online. In almost all instances, I have experienced the same long-term result: plants that initially seem to do alright but then begin to slowly decline and die. Only a few salvia plants have survived. I garden in Central Florida, and have many other plants which are Florida-raised, and virtually all of these do well; all are in full sun, receive regular proper water and fertilizer, and are planted properly in healthy soil amended with Black Kow composted cow manure. Our summers here in Central Florida are quite hot, and the sunlight is intense; rainfall can be sparse to excessive, but we make up for this with drip irrigation as well as plant beds which allow excess water to drain quickly. Such are the conditions of all my garden plants, including those from Proven Winners. My only clue as to why Proven Winners plants have done poorly in my yard, even when planted in the fall so that they have plenty of time to develop strong root structures before the summer's heat returns, is that they seem to be "hothouse" raised: elevated CO2, ideal conditions, modulated light, etc., and therefore poorly conditioned for Central Florida, even though all have been rated for my "zone". Whatever the reason, having lost several dozen plants for which I paid elevated prices (because I believed the hype and thought these would be superior long-lasting plants), I have decided to never buy another Proven Winners plant or product. They have not worked out well for me in any way.
