If you're a student, don't even bother.
My experience with this organization has been extremely disappointing. Everything feels stitched together and jury-rigged. And because I have a student membership, 90% of things I try to do on the site are met with a message stating "You don't have access, give us more money to upgrade your membership!", for even basic things. Most of the things in their benefits section don't apply to students, but they don't make this clear. The only useful things you can access as a student are occasional webinars, and you get a monthly magazine. For $80 this is nowhere near worth it. You do get free admission to an annual conference for photographers, but unless you live near Atlanta you won't be able to take advantage of this. You even have fewer options for insurance than other members.
Their signup process was a simple Google form, which I also had to put my credit card number into. This means it is likely stored in plain-text on someone's Google Drive. (Not sure of this, just suspected) Next, they charged my credit card and didn't send me any membership materials. I tried logging in with the account information I had provided but no luck. I waited two weeks, figuring eventually they would send me instructions on how to activate my account, before I emailed their membership services and only then was my account activated.
Clients don't care if you're a member of the PPA, as some people I've talked to have thought. Most of them don't know what it is, and the rest know it's pay-to-join and carries no real merit.
