6 weeks after a 9 day cruise around Svalbard and I am still ambivalent. The ship (Sea Spirit) is a very comfortable and pleasant floating hotel - the hotel staff is excellent and it would get a 4.5* rating (the missing 1/2* due to the lackluster entertainment in the bar). The expedition part of the cruise was disappointing. The staff were mostly knowledgeable in their respective domains, but many of the landing sites were old whaling stations and it appeared that the ship was actively trying to avoid the ice. As the cruise was marketed "In Search of Polar Bears" and the bears are most likely to be on and around ice, this was a serious letdown.

First, we sincerely appreciate your business and your feedback on the Svalbard voyage of June 28-July 8, 2017. This kind of information allows us to show our operations team what is working and where we have issues that need attention. Ultimately, it helps us to improve our cruises. We regret that the trip did not meet your expectations, and there were several other passengers aboard who voiced the same complaint. It is difficult for us to judge what the captain could have done or should have done in order to spend a little more time along the ice edge on that particular cruise. Our understanding is that on the best day for this activity, he made the decision to pull away from the ice due to stiff winds that were maneuvering large ice sheets around and which could potentially have trapped the Sea Spirit. This, in turn, made looking for polar bears in that prime area a bit more challenging. The ice situation is constantly evaluated using various criteria which maritime professionals interpret differently from the rest of us; they then make their decisions accordingly. We have been working with Captain Oleg for three Arctic and two Antarctic seasons, and he has led a lot of successful expeditions aboard Sea Spirit in different and sometimes quite challenging ice situations. We have always relied on his professionalism and focus on safety. Based on passenger questionnaires that we tallied after the voyage, most of the guests noted they had an excellent or good experience, but we understand that everyone’s expectations are different. What could have been done differently onboard would be better communications from the captain and expedition leader, explaining why he felt compelled to make the decisions he did to pull back from the ice edge. Again, we apologize that you weren’t able to experience all that you hoped for during your travels with us.

We just returned from a 9 day cruise on the Poseidon Sea Spirit around Svalbard. The ship was pleasant and the crew was friendly, but the trip was very disappointing. The captain and expedition leader were extremely cautious. They did not take us near the ice. They did nothing to make the trip interesting and exciting. One landing was generally the same as all of the others. When they had the chance to stretch go a little further and take a chance to see different wildlife or views, they opted not to do so. We had hoped for a once in lifetime experience but the trip was the equivalent of what I envision as a Caribbean cruise in the cold. When we returned to Longyearbyen, we spoke to people who had been on other boats at the same time in virtually the same waters we had sailed through. They told us that their captain had gone further and that they described amazing experiences. We have been all over the world to many out-of-the way places, including Antarctica. Our Antarctic adverture with Polar Latitiude was wonderful--and our captain and expedition leader were much more willing push themselves and the boat to provide us with a fantastic adventure. This was lacking in our Poseidon Arctic cruise.

We appreciate your candid comments and letting us know of your dissatisfaction with the expedition experience aboard the Sea Spirit on the June 28-July 8, 2017 Svalbard cruise. While several other passengers voiced a comment similar to yours, most guests were very pleased with their experience. Our passenger questionnaire, evaluated after the cruise, shows that 57% of your fellow travelers rated their experience "excellent" and 41% "good." Only one passenger rated the cruise "fair." Expedition Leader Michaela Mayer noted in her post-cruise report: "We had a good, normal Svalbard trip, with Blue and Fin whales, Beluga, three polar bear sightings, very good walrus sightings, many birds and super hikes," and the voyage log – provided to all guests – supports this. In regards to Zodiac landings and Zodiac cruises, the passengers rated these 4.68 overall out of a possible 5.0, with 84% of the guests saying they were "excellent and 16% saying they were "good." There were no fair or poor comments. The captain and expedition leader also received strong scores from the guests on this cruise, with 71% ranking the captain "excellent" and 17.5% "good." Sixty-nine percent ranked Michaela "excellent" and 32% ranked her "good." The post-cruise evaluation survey also showed a number of quotes like, "It was an excellent, wonderful, nice voyage," and "It was a great trip" and "We thoroughly enjoyed the whole voyage." We apologize if we were unable to meet your expectations. On any given Svalbard trip, there is a variable of luck involved in terms of how many polar bear sightings might be achieve, no matter how skilled or aggressive the captain is getting into the ice.

I recently went to Antarctica with a team from Poseidon Expeditions. The whole trip was faultless. The team were very experienced in many avenues, very dedicated and fluent with their individual roles. The care, interest and humour they showed with their interaction with the guests was amazing. I would highly recommend Poseidon Expeditions to anyone seeking adventure at any age.

I have been recommending this company & this adventure to everyone. I willingly expected to be taking a basic, not-so-glamorous, bunk bed trip on a working expedition ship. Instead I got class all the way - a warm, delightful spacious room, a-la-carte meals, excellent entertainment (go Johnny), wonderful crew and very personable, knowledgeable expedition staff...all topped off with a deep and unique close-up experience of Antarctica and its wildlife, the ice and the ocean. An experience that cannot be described...you just have to do it yourself. I would do it again. Antarctica with Poseidon - memorable, educational, soulful, classy, fun. DO IT!! Linda H

We enjoyed our trip in the Antarctica, every thing was great but I had an accident on the very first day and this made the whole trip difficult and painful! The dinky approaching the beach to collect us hit me on the chest, and I fell on my back and hit the pebbles. The pain was unbearable and I couldn't sleep throughout the cruise. Now I am well but it took me four months to recover and the whole experience was stigmatized by this accident! Hélène TCHOMLEKDJOGLOU Livieratos
