We wanted to take the time to let you know that, to provide the results, we analyze your dog's DNA across 700,000 locations (or markers) and then compare this to our reference panel. This panel comprises of more than 20,000 dogs from over 400 breeds, which we compare your dog's DNA to to find genetic similarities. We strive to provide all of our members with the best possible experience when they make new discoveries with us. We appreciate that the results can lead to a few questions right off the bat. We wanted to take the time to get back to you and let you know that we test every sample sent to us multiple times, and we also perform a series of quality checks throughout the testing process to make sure we're providing the best and most accurate results possible. Should our lab find an issue with a sample that would prevent us from providing results that we stand by, our lab will cease the testing process for that sample, and then offer you a free replacement test to repeat the process with a new and viable sample. Adding to this, you may recall registering your dog's test online, and the code used to achieve this will be unique and will only correspond to your dog's sample, which helps to ensure the results will be for your own pup. To provide the results, we analyze your dog's DNA across 700,000 locations (or markers) and then compare this to our reference panel. This panel comprises of more than 20,000 dogs from over 400 breeds, who we compare your dog's DNA to, to find genetic similarities. Even with a perfect knowledge of your dog's background, the results can still show some unexpected insights, due to the fact that genetic inheritance is entirely random. We can certainly appreciate that seeing Traits results that don't match the appearance or behaviour of your dog can initially seem odd. Think of your dog’s trait results as a peek inside their DNA, rather than as a definitive prediction about their traits. If their trait result says, for example, they have no short snout when, in fact, they do, the markers we looked at aren’t “wrong,” they just don’t tell the whole story. Most traits are influenced by many genes—some of which we don’t even know about yet. Environmental factors can also affect your dog’s traits. Nevertheless, we appreciate you taking the time to share your views, and we’ll certainly take this feedback on board.

Using advanced scientific techniques, we measure and analyze your dog’s genome at over 700,000 locations. Then, we compare your dog’s DNA results to our large and unique collection of DNA samples from dogs around the world to identify DNA similarities. While this is new science, which will only continue to become more specific, Know Your Pet DNA is already the most scientifically advanced dog DNA kit on the market - analyzing more than twice as much of your dog's genetic data compared to other dog DNA test kits.
