Beware! The PayPal’s Purchase Protection Plan is purports to protect the consumer by: PayPal’s Purchase Protection program may apply when you encounter these specific problems with a transaction: • You didn’t receive your item from a seller (referred to as an “Item Not Received” claim), or • You received an item, but the item isn’t what you ordered (referred to as a “Significantly Not as Described” claim). However, its viability is suspect when you look at the procedures and outcome especially when dealing with offshore Internet sites. Since they benefit through fees from the vendors’ transactions there is no incentive from blocking highly suspect sites. In particular is my recent experience with Gearbest. On the basis of consumers complaints with the BBB this site should be flagged to protect U.S. consumers. Better Business Bureau Rating is an “F” Gearbest.com • Failure to respond to 60 complaint(s) filed against business • Business has failed to resolve underlying cause(s) of a pattern of complaints • 126 complaint(s) filed against business • Length of time business has taken to respond to complaint(s) • • CURRENT ALERTS FOR THIS BUSINESS • Pattern of Complaint: • BBB files indicate a pattern of complaints concerning customer service, shipping and billing practices of Gearbest.com. Consumers are telling BBB that the business is not delivering items within the promised delivery date. Many consumers that purchased merchandise from Gearbest.com say that they still have not received the ordered merchandise after several weeks have passed. Some consumers that do receive their orders tell BBB that items received are defective. Many consumers claim that they offered store credit instead of the refund they are seeking after their items are not received. Numerous consumers report a lot of difficulty in getting a response the company’s customer service department, despite multiple attempts to each them by telephone or email. Several consumers that do interact with the company’s customer service team are allegedly told that their products have been shipped and they are provided with a tracking number. Those consumers claim that the tracking numbers received from Gearbest.com are not valid and cannot be traced by the shipping carrier (FedEx, USPS). My experience as well as others detailed in various Internet review sites highlight the almost insurmountable challenge in obtaining a refund. If PayPal is really concerned about protecting us as consumers then these vendors, like Gearbest would be suspended.

It's practical in its uses. Being able to buy internationally without much hassle and all. At least until someone rips you off. Because buyer protection is a joke. Takes forever and finds ridiculous excuses to not help.
