I recently tried to open an account at M&T Bank local branch in Long Island New York. Everything was good until they ran a report on me called Chexsystems. They said sorry we can't open an account for you. You have a red flag on chexsystems. Chexsystems is like a background check. I inquired from chexsystems what the problem was. Turns out there was no problem with me. But M&T has a policy that if you had an account and closed it , they will not give you a new account. I did have corporate account with them for many years. The local branch in west Babylon was delightful. 3 years ago I retired and sold my company. Of course I closed my corporate account. Now I had come back to open a personal account and they refused me saying that their policy was not allow previous customers back. How bizarre is that? BZ at the WB Branch

Worst bank I've ever dealt with for an auto loan. I called three days in a row requesting a payoff release letter showing that my vehicle loan had been paid in full on 07/01/2026. Each time, I was told the letter would be emailed to me. After the third call, I was finally informed that they do not email payoff release letters. FYI - todays date is 07/15/2026 In this day and age, it's hard to believe a financial institution cannot securely email such an important document. Instead, I was told I would have to wait 7–10 days for it to arrive by mail, delaying my ability to complete my transaction. The lack of communication, inconsistent information from customer service, and outdated process show very little regard for their customers' time. I would not recommend this bank for an auto loan.

This is by far the worst bank I have ever dealt with. My mortgage loan was transferred to this bank, and I've never had these issues with my previous lender. I have always made my payments by the due date, and my previous bank had no problem accepting partial payments throughout the month. This bank refuses to accept partial payments unless they are made exactly the way they want them. I was even told by one manager that I could call in and make a partial payment, but when I tried, that wasn't even an option. I have spoken with six different representatives, and every single one has given me a different answer. No one seems to know the actual policy, and there is no consistency in the information they provide. Instead of helping me make my payment, they spent more time trying to tell me how I should manage my finances. They repeatedly suggested refinancing my mortgage, even though I already have a great interest rate and have no interest in refinancing. I don't need financial advice—I simply need a bank that will accept my payment and provide accurate, consistent customer service. The customer service has been rude, unhelpful, and frustrating. I have always paid my mortgage on time, and this experience has been incredibly disappointing. If you value clear communication and customer service, I would not recommend doing business with this bank.

M&T just took over my mortgage and it has been very difficult to pay my mortgage! So hard that it seems like a scam to charge me fees! All they have to do is give my my mortgage account number, why didn't they send it to me in the mail?! I am on the border of being late on my mortgage - First they told me that I have to come in to a branch in person, but after explaining that they have no branches withing 2000 miles (!) they told me that I need a video appointment - so at two weeks late now trying to pay my mortgage... We'll see if it can be done!

If I could give them zero I would. Our mortgage got transferred to them. Our first payment went up $400 when nothing had changed. They said they received it like that but we have proof that that isn’t correct. They keep getting our county wrong as well. They say they’ll look into it. It’s been two weeks and still nothing. I am beyond frustrated with them. $400 extra each month adds up.

Worst Bank ever deposited money into the ATM machine froze now have been waiting three days. Supposedly I will get my money next week. What a joke.

WOW what a bunch of Bozos, first I'm talking to someone in another part of the world(not understandable)... asked to speak to rep in the USA. Then to make matters worse (after getting to rep based in USA)Michelle is not able to email "payoff" amt or as M&T calls it (pay to zero balance), glitch in the system. All as I can say they get triple thumbs down on any and all correspondence using the phone. What a waste of time!!!!!!!!

In an attempt to pay my loan off, it took 4 phone calls. 2 of the four phone calls I was not able to understand due to a language barrier and asked to be transferred to someone else and they said they did not have that option so I had to keep calling until I got someone I could understand. After paying my loan off they will not send me anything proving I paid the loan off!!! What!!! This is ridiculous! I gave the $12,000.00 and they will not give me a receipt. I will NEVER use this bank again. If you give a bank that much money and they refuse to give you a receipt, HUGE RED FLAG FOLKS!!!!!!
