This is the worst bank ever. For starters, walking into a branch is like walking into a morgue. No personality at all. Blank walls, not a picture in sight, so depressing that I hate having to go inside. Not sure who thought that was a good idea but it’s truly horrible. It’s painfully obvious that every single one of the workers at my local branch hate their jobs, and who can blame them. If it wasn’t such a pain to switch banks, I would have done it a long time ago. I was a longtime customer of their predecessor, People’s United. The bank basically went downhill on Day One when they took over. And for heavens sake, put $10 in your ATM’s! You can get $5, $20, but no $10. Makes absolutely no sense. And the drive thru is so awkward that you have to get out of your car, or contort your body in unnatural ways, just to use it. I have seen so many older people struggle with it. All that’s needed is to move it out a few inches…not rocket science. I will be leaving as soon as I can get a week off to sort out all my auto payments. The bank in the next plaza that I use for one of my clients is amazing. It’s so cheery inside the branch, beautiful pictures on the walls, and the employees look so happy! It has a real hometown feel. This bank seriously needs to do much better. Take your clues from other banks!

Worst Mortgage company ever. Took advantage of a 94 year old man, my father, stating we had no insurance, whe had insurance, then called our insurance and had them refund what was already paid in full just so they could overcharge us with lender placed insurance. Complete scam

M&T Bank took us to collections for the $0.39 left on our mortgage which we had talked to them multiple times and had sent in a check that must have gotten lost in the mail. We had called and said that we would send in another check for the value since the first check must got lost and they tried charing us a $58.00 late fee and then sent us to collections and it went on our credit report. They would not work with us and we were just trying to get our loan closed out.

Horrible customer service. They just want you to use the automated system that does not work. The bankers and managers are incompetant. I am sure it is not their direct fault but upper management should allow payments to be made over the phone rather than an automated system that does not work.

Tried to open a free checking account at M&T in order to have a nearby bank. After getting into the online app process 2 poor details came to light: 1 - M&T is not part of any larger ATM network, so unless one drives to a branch ATM fees apply & are NOT refunded. 2 - No free checks are provided. Instead they charge an absurdly high price for a small number of checks. This effort was abandoned. Only glad to have found their shortcomings BEFORE placing any funds there.

Today we attempted to withdraw money from the Wolfeboro, New Hampshire location. The machine showed that the money had been dispensed. $300 as requested, but the machine never produce the money. Upon going into the bank, I found that it did actually charge my account the $300 even though it did not produce the cash and if I did not go into the bank, I would’ve never known this. Apparently the ATM had not been properly stocked with money and had run out during my transaction. This has happened many times before at this branch with this ATM routine typically Monday and Tuesday mornings. It turned into a shit show where I had to go into the bank to get it straightened out and actually write a check for the money that I needed. Nothing was mentioned by the teller that they had actually debited my account the $300 even though the cash should not been produced I only found this out after reviewing my statement. The teller obviously realized what it happened and credited my account the $300 but never mentioned a thing about it.when totally unacceptable.

Bank is not reliable. Potential fraudsters in mgt in the local branch in Towson, Md. Savings account was accessed. Customer service has lot to work on. Transactions take too long to process. archaic.

My mortgage was sold to M&T bank in 2022 and the issues started almost immediately. Within a couple months, I received a notice stating my escrow account was delinquent and as a result my mortgage payment would increase by $200 for the next 12 months to cover the shortage, then return to a slightly higher amount to maintain the escrow payment. I called to put some clarity to the situation and go over numbers and the math seemed a bit off, but I didn't have all the information so I thought, "it's only 12 months, no big deal." Flash forward 11 months and another notice arrives stating there had been significant increases and my escrow payment was being permanently increased by $200. Not $200 from the original amount but $200 from the already increased amount. I gathered information from all sources, ran the numbers and found my escrow payment should only have increased by approximately $90 from the original monthly payment. I contacted the bank, only to be greeted by a horribly rude woman who actually hung up on me when I informed her that I had every source document and questioned her accounting skills suggesting my 4th grade student could figure this out on his own with a pencil. As time went by, we saw another increase of $200 and another for just under $150. The same accounting issues were present and the banks math was inconsistent with the statements from the county tax assessor's office, homeowners insurance company, and mortgage insurance company. Any calls to M&T Bank were greeted with the same rudeness and pathetic customer service. They are obviously trained to gaslight customers, then terminate calls. Our mortgage was eventually sold to another bank, which continued the bad accounting, then another, as we were preparing to sell the home. We closed on the sale of the home and paid off the loan on August 28th of this year (2026) and just before closing the new bank sent us a notification we had a $1,590 overage in our escrow account for the year and issued a refund. After we paid off the loan completely, we were notified we were owed $11,980 because of years of being over charged for escrow. If you have the opportunity and ability to escape M&T Bank, do it and do it immediately. They robbed my family of over $600 a month for almost 1/2 a decade. They are such arrogant fools they cannot admit a mistake and would rather steal from their customers than correct a mistake that even a monkey with an abacus could avoid making. This company should be barred from the mortgage industry and be forced to forgive every debt they hold.
