Lender Discriminates Against Non-US Citizens
My husband and I were approved for a $5000 loan and scheduled an appointment to come in to finalize paperwork on Wednesday, February 2. My husband was asked to bring in his ID, social security card and proof of income. I was asked to bring in my ID and proof of income. Collectively we were asked to bring in a document showing address verification. When we came in for our appointment, we worked with Holly. I handed Holly my husband’s ID, his social security card, proofs of income, address verification and my USCIS work authorization card (serving as photo ID) and my social security card because my name is spelled differently on my USCIS ID card. My SS card has a restriction on it saying, “valid for work only with INS authorization”. To give context, this restriction is for an employer to look at and ask me for my work authorization if I am applying for a job. It has zero bearing on my credit and does not define, in any way what my citizenship status is. Mind you, I wasn’t even required to bring in my social security card – I brought it to show the spelling of my name. Holly left the room with our documents and came back in. She said that she had some bad news and that they were “unable to approve the loan because I am on not a citizen and on a work visa”. This was the first time anything regarding my citizenship came up. I am not on a work visa – I have never in my life been on a work visa and I certainly never said anything to Holly about a work visa. I explained to Holly that I am not on a work visa, and I was confused about how she came to that conclusion; I am considered a permanent resident because of my indefinite humanitarian parole status. Holly then asked her supervisor to come in. I explained to the supervisor that I am a permanent resident, to which Holly interrupted me and asked, “but you’re not a citizen?” My husband then asked Holly if she knew the difference between a citizen and a permanent resident to which she responded, “no I don’t”. Holly’s supervisor then asked her District Manager to come in. Once he came in, he said that because of the statement on my social security card, they will not approve my loan. First it was because I’m on a fictional work visa, now it’s because of the social security card that I wasn’t required to bring in. I tried explaining, again, that I am considered a permanent resident and that I’ve applied and have been approved previously for things such as federal student loans and other personal loans with no issues. He then said, “well then you can go apply at a different lender”. I wasn’t asked for and did not have the chance to provide any documentation to show proof that my citizenship status does meet the loan criteria. We were told to go elsewhere.
