Terrible. I had money sitting in an account for several years that was basically hidden from me because they had issues with their interface. It sat in cash because I could not see it in any of the summaries.
They also charge ridiculous junk fees. Go anywhere else.

Do not use this fraudulent service
Do not use this fraudulent service. THey restrict your account with zero reason and you cannot fix it without going through customer service. Where you then find out that they really don't have any customer service. No one will answer the phone, no will will answer the chats. If they do finally answer the chat then they'll tell you to do these steps that you've already done and verify you recieve the emails which you do. Then oh well, they still can't do anything about it but escalate the issue. By escalate, they intend to forget about it because they really do not care about their customers.

I had a very disappointing experience…
I had a very disappointing experience with M1 Finance. I originally liked the platform and was interested in using their investing and margin features, but my experience with customer service and account handling has completely changed my opinion.
My account was frozen after an identity verification issue. I eventually completed the requested verification steps, including uploading the required selfie and documentation, but despite complying with their requests, my funds have remained inaccessible. M1 informed me that my account would not be liquidated and my funds would not be returned until the end of August, which I find completely unacceptable.
I have repeatedly contacted customer service through phone calls, emails, and chat. I was told the issue would be escalated to the compliance team, but I have received no meaningful updates, no timeline, and no response. Recently, my calls appear to go straight to voicemail, and my chats are not being answered. It feels like I am being ignored while my own money remains locked.
A financial company should have clear communication and a reasonable process for resolving account issues. Holding a customer’s funds for an extended period without proper communication creates a terrible customer experience and a lack of trust.
I would strongly caution others before depositing significant funds with M1 Finance. I will be pursuing further escalation through the appropriate regulatory channels because I do not believe this situation has been handled appropriately.
I regret moving funds here and will be taking my investing elsewhere.

It's a one way street with miserable AI…
It's a one way street with miserable AI customer service.
There's a $100 fee to get your money out or close an account.
Since starting them a few years ago, I've learned there are similar platforms that don't pull these stunts.

I regret trying this service
I regret trying this service. I requested to close my account with them 20 days ago, and they processed the "liquidation." Then today, a new transfer was pulled back into my account.
They don't allow you to permanently delete a recurring transfer only to "pause" it. They don't allow you to "delete" the connection with an existing bank account.
They clearly make every effort to make it a one-way street: one way in, no way out.

Two Days Without Access to My Investments
On 6/29/26 I was abruptly locked out of my M1 account and given a new ‘enter code’ screen. After verifying my DOB and last 4 SSN, support pushed for extra documents and later said my account is ‘restricted’ without clearly explaining why or how to fix it. Several calls ended in surveys instead of connecting me to a supervisor, leaving me unable to access or trade and worried about my funds.”

M1 finance makes it nearly impossible…
M1 finance makes it nearly impossible to cash out your money when you’re ready. They force you to use plaid, and plaid does not work in setting up a transfer with betterment, with Chase, with Fulton, with capital one. This is a scam and when you try to resolve the issue you are forced to have an unhelpful conversation with AI, no one is available to help resolve the issue. Scam scam scam. I’m being charged three dollars a month and was just charged $30 for a failed transaction because I can’t actually change my bank.

Hidden Fees! Beware!!
I reopened an account with M1 Finance without any clear disclosure that they had implemented a $3 monthly fee for smaller accounts or that leaving the account would cost $100.
The $3 fee was sprung on me after reopening. When I immediately tried to close the account, I was told I would have to pay a $100 closing or transfer fee to leave. In other words, I was trapped between continuing to pay an undisclosed monthly fee or paying a much larger penalty just to get out.
I spent hours on the phone with customer service, escalated to supervisors, and sent multiple emails explaining that I would never have reopened the account had these fees been clearly disclosed. They refused to help in any way or offer a reasonable exit. The response was essentially: pay the fee or stay stuck.
This feels like a classic dark-pattern setup — introduce a recurring fee without clear notice, then block exit with a disproportionate penalty. Customer service was unhelpful and dismissive, even after repeated escalation.
If you value transparency or the ability to leave an account without being punished, be very careful. Once you’re in, getting out can be expensive.
