Trust This, it Works!
Bruce, I'm 72, a retired educator, mom of three daughters and a grandmother, married/divorced twice. My early life was filled with conflict, my adult life very similar. I have seen 17 therapists over the course of my life, many only once (bad fit), trying to find answers. Went through Marriage Encounter. Worked for years with a spiritual director. Read a ton of self-help books. I put a lot of effort into my own personal growth to the point of being very capable of making my own happiness. In 2014 I married for the third time, the love of my life. We met at 14, went our separate ways because we were forced apart by my mother. Think "The Notebook" with a different ending. Being with him again was a dream come true. He lost his wife suddenly two years before we met again late in life, and his grown daughters resolved to punish us, and me in particular. Our conflicts began the moment we met again and have recently accelerated to the point of us both believing this is just too much. I saw you speak about the Conflict Cure on Facebook. I've grown very skeptical that any counseling could help, and my husband is adamant against it. Your straightforward, honest, heartfelt demeanor got my attention and gained just enough of my trust to try again. I signed up thinking that maybe I could learn something new, especially when I heard you say that it could make a difference if I did this alone. I haven't even scratched the surface in terms of the exercises you recommend, but I feel as if something in me has shifted. Here's what has helped me so far (and I'm still two classes away from finishing the course), and I have to preface this by saying that I thought I'd learned all this already, but evidently I'm hearing it again for the first time! * The schooling about how our minds work, especially about human nature's defensive mode when confronted. * The reminder that we are caught in the history of our unmet childhood needs. * The tools of what you refer to as "softening" towards my husband, little things that are so easy to do. That has been a game-changer. I didn't realize how much my cynicism and bitterness about our fights translated into my language with him and my actions towards him. The past several weeks I actually like myself better! I've become more compassionate and willing to give. He doesn't even realize that I'm taking this class, but his behavior towards me has changed too. That makes complete sense, but life has beat me up so much I stopped believing things could improve. My daughters, who have been witness to my journey, are surprised and happy that I have found something to address our conflict. My newfound happiness is now having a domino effect on the entire family, dare I say, even my stepdaughters. Thank you, Bruce. You are one of a kind, in your teaching style, your compassion, your understanding of human nature and relationships. Take it from someone who has tried for decades to figure this out! I highly recommend your class to anyone at any stage of life/relationship!

Hi Barbara, After everything you’ve been through and all the work you’ve done, it says a lot that you stayed open enough to try again and change how you show up. I’m glad you’re seeing changes in yourself and in your relationship, and thank you for sharing this. -Bruce
