Honestly I I could give 0 star, I would. Absolutely worse experience with the Il Tollway. 1. Last year before taking a trip from Upper Pennisua of Michigan, I registered our vehicle with Il Tollway. In theory, I was hopping to receive the bill and pay online. I checked on the account like more than 20 times after the trip and paid some bills. After like 2 months passed by, I received a bill in the mail with the fines up to over $40 for maybe two toll booths. That was on top of my online payment. I was pissed but hard to get through their customer service. So I paid the $40 something to avoid the headaches. 2. This year we travelled from De Pere WI to Indiana Dunes National Park on Aug. 22nd 2026. I used their online account and put in the date of our travel. We came back the same day. I paid around $8.80 after around 2 weeks. I thought that was end of the story. Today on 10/23/2026, after 2 months of my days trip, I received one email indicating I have unpaid tolls. But when I log in to my online account it shows 0 unpaid tolls. I called their customer service number, after like 15-20 minutes, I was able to talk with a customer service representative. She blamed me to register my license plate as temporary. I said I put in the day of my travel when we drove pass the toll booths. But she insisted that I did something wrong. Then she said she fixed the issue online and then hung up on me without any further explanation. It was $9.20. It is a small amount so I paid the bill. After I paid the bill, I checked the online account again and realized the transaction was paid already. So they double charged me. I do not want to waste my time to call them back again. But I have to vent, worst experience dealing with Illinois tolls.

In the past month, my friend got a $1300 bill, and i got an $800 bill from IL tollway, and we both live in Indiana. I thought i had paid all my outstanding tolls but i was sorely mistaken. I will avoid Illinois like the plague going forward.

This is an outrageously expensive tollway. I signed up for pay by plate and get charges weeks and even months later. The charges for a trip I take a few of times a year have added up to hundreds of dollars. In addition, I have had collections notices sent to me, and have shown up on my credit report, for bills I never saw and no one can explain. When I have pay by plate, how is it I have overdue invoices I have never seen, in the hundreds of dollars? Customer service is no help and the state does nothing. My advice is to put “avoid tolls” in your directions and take your chances.

I'm embarrassed to use the tollway. I signed up for pay-by-plate, but even then, they sometimes don't "process" the plate for up to 30 days, by which time they send you a mailed invoice with $3 extra service fees applied per EVERY toll you passed through. They give no notice of a toll due, and the sign with the website is the tiniest sign which is poorly placed and unreadable. This business is a shame to deal with, and customer service is 100% useless. I'd recommend someone with perhaps a little bit of common sense go in and fix this tollway issue and join the 21st century.

Absolute garbage. Didn't mean to get on your dumb road, tried to pay, tried to pay, tried to pay. What a bundle of bad karma for the whole of this organisation.

The worst experience ever ! Cannot login to the website and their system not sending Emails. Automated AI is a pure IDIOT. Live support ? one has to first get through AI (which usually takes 15-30min). Support people are super rude and if they do not like your tone or answers they just hung up on you. Nearest physical location is on Chicago suburbs, so from chicago downtown one must drive about 20 miles. Their website is an absolute trash. Contact information (phone) is very well hidden from user . THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE OUT OF BUSINESS and HAVE THEIR LICENSE SUSPENDED ! I cannot login to my account and there is no way to fix it, online or over the phone. The only way is to spend 2-3 hours to drive there and talk to a live person.

1. It takes 3-30 days that they charge a toll. 2. Even if I clearly indicated for the plate number that it is a rental car they kept sending toll charges that occured a month after my rent. 3. Customer Service sent the same link I used to approcah them for the first, at the second attempt they sent a new link where I could download the forms for making a complaint.

I'm from Michigan. I was expecting toll booths like the last time I was there. I got home and knew I had to take care of it. Set up an account. It says "up to 14 days to show up", but also "14 days to pay". WHAT? SO... I was expecting an email when the charges show up because I SIGNED UP WITH MY EMAIL. Nope. I keep checking for about a week, then I forget because life is busy. 3 weeks go by, something reminds me, and yup, there are the charges, listed as over due. I go to pay... and NOTHING. It just says "Do not submit again or you will get charged twice." But... no email receipt, no "you paid", nothing. Still showing up as unpaid. Do they have sloths doing manual transactions? So at this point, am I going to get arrested when (IF) I go back to Illinois? Am I going to get a thousand dollar bill in the mail? Dumbest system I've seen in years. Nothing like having a monopoly on the highways and then half-a$$ing the payment system.
