Hear and Play MusicReviews of hearandplay.com

My experience was a great one, because there was someone there to guide me the whole step of the way, Dr. Onye incorporated direction instructions motivation that truly helped me to stay connected to stay encouraged to stay engaged now that we have the additional coaches on staff that is extra added bonus for me if ever, I’m needing some one on one attention outside of class. I have found the classes to be extremely resourceful with detailed instruction and guidance that allows creativity, but structure I now see myself and consider myself to be a musician, working on my craft and perfecting it through progress.

You need more than one teacher teaching the VIP program. Dr. Onye's personality and style of teaching is not for everyone. I wanted to learn to play gospel music, not go to church service at every class. Many of the comments made by the instructor are offensive to other religions and genders. He is not very funny, so he should not try to be. I also did not like the emotional outburst and the targeting of individual students. Too much time is wasted in his class on non-music and the subject of the class. After reading your reply to my review, I will add the following comments. My genuine support, encouragement, and motivational efforts focused on the other students, my peers are independent of my personal experience as a student. I am, and will always be supportive of all in a group learning environment that I participate in. This is not to say that I didn't walk away from the program with some benefit and wisdom, and I accomplished my intention of "learning to play by hear." Without getting into minute detail, I believe my issues with Onye were personal and perhaps a conflict in our cultures, personal philosophy, and his treatment of women. I didn't appreciate several things. Especially the way he ridiculed and criticized other traditional music styles like classical music during class. I was also bothered by his disingenuous comments of student praise that was not constructive to their progress and in many classes damaging. Those students have also left the program. Most important to me was the way he made commitments to me and several others and then "changed the rules of the game" those reneging on those agreements. For many, he would not respond to their messages, especially if he didn't like their message. When he realized I was not going to "roll-over and play radio silent" like others, he stopped responding to my messages as well and proceeded to tantrum during "a class" attacking my actions and person. All because I questioned his change of process and disagreed with him. He portrayed himself as if he was unquestionable and "how dare" someone question or disagree with him. I was not present in class but watched the replay. That was it for me! In my first 6-7 months in the program, I was very supportive. I helped other students and offered suggestions to improve the program. Onye welcomed and implemented many. I trusted and took him at his word. However, I observed situations with others (many of whom eventually left the program) and then I began to have similar experiences. I realized that he saw himself as superior to us and all-knowing as if he was a pastor in a church and the students were the parishioners. Although I am speaking for myself these are my experiences and opinions, others in the program had shared similar experiences with me during my stay in the program and I directly witnessed some. Finally, I told Onye that we were customers paying "good" money for the program and that I expected to be treated as a customer. He disagreed with me on this. It was his way or the highway so I happily took the next off-ramp!

These classes are so amazing. In a short period of time I learned things that in all my years of learning piano, I couldn’t understand and Dr Onya and the rest of the teachers Coach Josh made it so simple to understand. Trying to see what I can do to get back in, I love the classes love the teachers, the other students who provoke you to study.
