GoodDog is enabling backyard breeders and failing animal welfare
Despite GoodDog's reassuring claim on their website that customers “don't have to worry about whether the breeders you find on Good Dog are responsible and good to their animals”, my traumatizing experience argues otherwise. I write this review to share an ordeal echoed in a *shocking* 8% of TrustPilot's 1-star reviews of GoodDog. Among those who've been compelled to share their experiences, one in every twelve recounts a hauntingly similar ordeal: a non-existent or critically unwell dog, a lost non-refundable deposit, and woefully inadequate assistance from GoodDog. The only response, almost uniform across these 1-star reviews, is GoodDog's predictably repetitive reassurances of having reached a resolution after supposedly working with the aggrieved party - a claim that, from my experience, is blatantly false. My ordeal with GoodDog paints a picture remarkably similar to the other 1-star experiences. Our initial joy at the prospect of bringing a puppy into our family swiftly morphed into a distressing nightmare. We found ourselves caring for an ill puppy, grappling with health problems that led to mounting vet bills in the thousands. These problems were directly attributable to the breeder's gross negligence and GoodDog’s apparent failure in their vetting process. This breeder, it’s worth noting, was supposedly screened through GoodDog’s highly touted, "proprietary vet-backed screening process". This process, as GoodDog brags on their website, was developed by veterinary experts Dr. Brian Greenfield and Dr. James Serpell. As I discovered, this claim rings hollow. The breeder lacked any veterinary records and the breeder’s assurances about deworming the puppies turned out to be false. Our puppy arrived infested with ticks, fleas, and intestinal worms, each of which presented a significant health hazard to my family, leading to necessary medical consultations. When I turned to GoodDog for intervention and resolution, I was met with nothing more than a canned response, which seemed to mirror their standard reply to all one-star reviews: "Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re glad that our team was able to work with you to reach a resolution...". In my case, this "resolution" involved the breeder pocketing the $500 deposit and GoodDog pocketing $100 in service fees. I can't help but feel betrayed and frustrated. What compounds my dismay is GoodDog's glaring negligence and their failure to take responsibility for a backyard breeder they let on their platform, and their refusal to contribute towards the substantial veterinary costs, which are estimated to be north of $2.6-3k. By allowing such breeders a platform, GoodDog is directly contributing to animal cruelty. Regrettably, GoodDog, which touts itself as a safeguard against backyard breeders, seems to enable breeders who habitually subject animals to abuse and neglect. This not only exacerbates the issue of animal cruelty they pledge to combat but also contradicts their mission. Despite their claims of a 'proprietary vet-backed screening process', GoodDog seems to shirk any form of ethical or financial accountability, failing to provide appropriate recourse to those who have entrusted them with their pet's welfare. I implore anyone considering using GoodDog's service to reflect deeply on this harrowing experience. A platform that professes to combat animal cruelty should never be complicit in it. ### Update 6/12/2023 ### Thank you (GoodDog team) for your response below and the eventual refund. It's important to note, however, that this refund only came about after I raised my concerns on TrustPilot and engaged in multiple phone conversations with your team. It seems unreasonable that such a lengthy discourse was required just to secure a justified, bare-minimum, refund. While it is somewhat relieving that the breeder in question is no longer part of the Good Dog community, the fact they were included at all is deeply concerning. Beyond the emotional distress and lost work hours, the veterinary expenses required to nurse this mistreated puppy back to health far exceed the refund given, which covers only a small portion of my total financial expenditure.

Hi Ida, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and the opportunity it provides for us to address your concerns. We understand how important it is to bring a healthy and happy pet into your family, and we are deeply sorry that this was not the case for you. We are glad that members of our team were able to connect with you and provided you with a full refund of all amounts paid on our platform, though we understand this does not make up for your experience. We can also confirm that this breeder is no longer a member of the Good Dog community. We apologize again for your experience, and are always here should you have any other questions. Please don't hesitate to reach out. Warmly, The Good Dog Team
