They still charge you to file State Tax so it’s not free. Choose a new business name.
Response from FreeTaxUSAApr 16, 2024
Hello! I am sorry if there was any confusion with our services. If you go to our website, it clearly says that federal returns are free and state returns are $14.99 in large font. We try to be very transparent about our services and pricing. Please contact [email protected] if you have any additional questions.

Used this preparer for the 1st time
Used this preparer for the 1st time, and now I still have not received my refund and cant get answers from anyone as to what the delay is. If I had used Turbotax like I normally do then I would not be in this situation. State asked for proof of different things in which I sent, and Federal just tells me its delayed with no reasoning sent in the mail. I filed on Jan 29th and it's now the middle of April, I should have had my return awhile ago and this tax service doesnt help with it whatsoever.

I'm so sorry for the frustration with not receiving your refund yet. I know how important it is. Unfortunately, the IRS doesn't provide us with any information after they accept the return. However, if your return was accepted, then there is confirmation that the IRS does have it. Please monitor the IRS website for updates at: https://www.irs.gov/refunds. If you have any further questions, please message us from the Support link in your account. Customer Support is standing by ready to help.

NOT FREE
Saw on the state website they were free so I went to their website. NOT FREE. You have to have come from the state website or it’s $14.99 even though it says FREE on the state website
Response from FreeTaxUSAApr 10, 2024
We are very sorry for the confusion. We must adhere to the IRS guidelines when it comes to the Free File service. One of them being you have to specifically come from the IRS or state tax websites to access the free file software. We are sorry for any frustration this has caused. Please reach out to our customer support team within your account if you have any other questions.

Only Federal is Free
No where was it stated that at "free" tax USA you could only file federal for free and if you need to file your state you either have to pay them or choose a different service. Now that I've already filed my federal taxes with them I have to either file my taxes AGAIN with a different company OR pay them to allow me to file my state taxes through them. Predatory business practices. Should be illegal.
Response from FreeTaxUSAApr 6, 2024
I am very sorry you were not aware of the cost of our state returns. We are very transparent about the cost on the homepage of our website. You can go to freetaxusa.com and view this information clearly published at the top of the page. I apologize for any frustration you have experienced. If you have other concerns, please reach out to our customer support in the Support Center in your account.

"Free" isn't really free! Look before you leap!
If you need support, no matter how simple, you have three choices: free email which never gets answered, chat for $7.50 or Pro for $49.99 (presumably someone who can spell gouge! Once your return is filed you NO LONGER have access to the forms, only a PDF with a bold PREVIEW COPY DO NOT FILE splashed across each page. ANY correction requires their support - you're prohibited from making any changes once the return is submitted. Misspelled your middle name, typed a wrong digit, wrong PIN? Pay up! And, if you have to resubmit you have to pay for that as well.
The biggest issue I have is that once your return is filed the return is NO LONGER AVAILABLE for review, copy or print. Why? The files are NOT SAVED ON YOUR COMPUTER! In other words, you no longer have a record of your return. They have all those forms and you can't have access - no matter that they have all your personal and financial information on them. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! Presumably, all that information is on THEIR STORAGE - no matter that it's encrypted. At least I hope it is because they would be a prime target for cyber thieves.
H&R Block, TurboTax, et al save clear copies of all forms on YOUR computer and you have free access and can even make changes at will. Need to amend a return - no problem. Sure you pay for the re-filing online BUT you could also just mail the return in at NO COST except the stamps.

We sincerely apologize for any frustration you may be experiencing. I would be happy to address your concerns here.
We understand that having a downloaded copy of your completed forms is very important. Upon completing and submitting your return, you may sign in and download those completed forms on the “Check Status” page in your account.
If you find a mistake before you complete your return, or if the original submission is rejected by the IRS, you can go back and make changes at any time before you submit (or resubmit) your forms. There is no additional charge for resubmitting an original return that has not yet been accepted by the IRS.
Once that return has been accepted by the IRS, however, the only way to make changes to the information the IRS has on file for you is to file an amended return. Since making changes to your original return at that point would cause the return on the account to differ from what the IRS has on file for you, the original return on the account is locked upon acceptance from the IRS. If you need to make adjustments after the return has been accepted, you can file an amended return using the tools in your account.
We provide free support to all our customers through the Support Center in their accounts. Our support team will respond to these emails promptly, often within 24 hours. We do offer optional support upgrades as well, but there is no obligation to purchase those additional services to receive assistance.
We also take the security of your personal data very seriously and we meet (or exceed) all security requirements outlined by the IRS as well as industry standards.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment about your experience and allowing us to address your concerns. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please reach out to our friendly and responsive support team and they will be happy to help.

My account was hacked
My account was hacked, email. Password, and phone number was changed locking me out of my own information. I sent an email to FreeTaxUSA advising them of the situation and requesting that the account be blocked, deactivated, or reverted back to my contact information, however it has been a month with no responses and the culprit still has access to my and my children’s information and Social. I want to start a class action as the lack of security, responses, and communication has put my tax information and private information at risk for a month now and even still the website and company/organization has done nothing to correct the situation. In my opinion this is a data breach and clear negligence in their security measures considering they collect, hold, and essentially are responsible for the information they require. Hopefully I will get responses before I am forced to seek legal action against them. A month and counting for situation rectification.

Hello, Mercedes. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience. We take security very seriously, so I'm sorry that there seems to have been a breakdown in communication somewhere. Our customer support team would love to help you. Please reply to the request for information so we can look into this.

False advertising, liars
Completely false advertising like Turbo Tax. Nothing is free and they should be sued. I had to pay to file my state taxes. Filing a dispute with my bank.
In response to their response. I already contacted you and you didn’t provide any resolution. As stated, I am filing a dispute with my bank.
Response from FreeTaxUSAMar 5, 2024
Hello La Reina! I am so very sorry for any frustration you had with our software. Federal tax returns are always free! We do clearly outline on our homepage that if you want to add a state return, there is a small preparation fee. However, we do not add any hidden e-file fees, that is a flat rate. If you have any other concerns about the payments you made, please reach out to our Customer Support from the Support Center in your account.
