Exceptional service.

As a client, I can understand why DT Translations may seem like a great company, with their "fair" pricing and quick turnaround times. As a translator, though, this company is not the best place to work. They pay about a third of what a translator would charge independently. Of course, it is to be expected that they need to earn their commission, but paying a third of the regular price is a bit excessive, especially when the projects sometimes have less than a 24-hour deadline and the high expectations (and requirements) they have for their translators. I still decided to try and work with them to earn some extra cash on the side. However, on the first three days of being accepted, they sent project after project- about seven of them in a short span of time and with quick turnaround times. I had to decline some of them to focus on the ones I had accepted, and some of them were ridiculous... One example: they needed about forty pages done in less than four days, and the documents were mostly bank statements with dozens and dozens of transactions on each page (also full of abbreviations and bank lingo). After those three projects and three or four days into the company, I stopped receiving assignments altogether. Nothing to this day, about two weeks later. I sent two messages to management through the translator's portal, to no avail, and an email to the regular email address on their website, also to no avail. Not only is the lack of communication with their employees disappointing, but I just found out they haven't done anything to pay me for my work. You need to send them an invoice through PayPal stating the projects done and the amount they promised when assigned, so that is what I did. Almost a week ago. And yes, once again, to no avail. PayPal keeps letting me know that the invoice hasn't been seen and that I should contact the recipient, DT Translations, to get paid faster. As a contractor, I also had high expectations for the company, but I can say my experience working with them has been extremely disappointing. Especially coming from a company that is a member of the American Translators Association. Again, I understand that, as a client, having the promise of receiving your translations in such a short time seems incredible, but the company needs to be more realistic and either give more time for the deadline or pay better. And, of course, communicate with their translators. If they decided to stop giving me assignments because I declined some, the least they could do is communicate that, either by responding to the messages I sent on their portal or replying to my email. Not to mention, I was working as a freelancer, and one of the things about this type of contract is that you can decide when to accept or decline assignments. UPDATE AFTER COMPANY'S REPLY: First off, the claim that assignments were left unanswered is simply not true. Each time I declined a project, I went to the platform to formally decline and later I received emails from the company letting me know the projects were reassigned to someone else and were no longer mine. It is incredible they could lie about that. Then, regarding payment: the platform lets you choose your rate, that is correct, and I chose the cheapest, also correct. However, it also lets you know that the higher you charge, the less projects you will have coming. I decided I wanted a good flow of work, so I chose the cheapest rate. Still, my opinion about it being cheap compared to how fast they want translators to work still remains. Most of my projects had a less than 24 hours deadline. The short turnaround time was never noticed during onboarding or later. The company said first that my lack of incoming assignments was because I left them unanswered. Once I told them and showed them I had declined and they were reassigned, they claimed it was because I declined too many... Regarding the invoice, I double checked and I did send it to the correct email. It was stated since the beginning that translators would be paid 30-45 days after the submission, so the company's representative asked me if I was familiar with their methods. My issue was that the invoice was sent over a week ago and it still shows as not seen. When do they receive and check invoices then? A week before payment? Given the multiple good reviews, I could understand the passive-aggressiveness from this company. However, it seems too much. Lastly, I just want to add that, on the translators' platform, the messaging option was formerly labeled as "Message mamagement", and after my review and a couple of exchanges, it is now labeled "Feedback" and has an automated response. So, now they also restricted my ability to message them. They still gave me emails, but my previous one is still unanswered, so...
Response from D&T TranslationsOct 18, 2026
Dear Jennifer, Thank you for providing your feedback. We would like to clarify a few points regarding your experience. Regarding your concerns about compensation, our system dispatches orders based on the specific per-word rates you selected when you registered. You have full control over this and can increase your preferred rates within your account settings at any time. You also mentioned that you stopped receiving assignments. Our automated assignment system deprioritizes accounts and lowers performance ratings when multiple consecutive orders are ignored. Our records indicate that 4 recent orders sent your way were left unassigned without a response. To prevent this from happening, we provide an "Availability for new projects" toggle at the top of the translator portal. Turning this toggle off when you are unavailable protects your performance rating from dropping. Regarding communication and your unpaid invoice, we did receive your chat messages on October 14 and October 15. Due to high inquiry volumes, portal chat responses can occasionally experience delays. However, we have no record of emails sent to the correct billing departments. To ensure your invoice is processed and seen by the right team, please send it to the designated billing email address found in the Payments section of your Translator Knowledge Base (the question mark icon on the top navbar). We value your work and want to help you get back on track. As a one-time courtesy, we will restore your account priority and performance rating. We kindly ask that you utilize the availability toggle moving forward and update your preferred rates if you wish to be assigned higher-paying projects. Dear Jennifer, Thank you for your update. We sincerely apologize for our previous misstatement regarding your orders. You are completely correct that you actively declined them rather than leaving them unanswered, and we appreciate you clarifying that. However, in our automated system, consecutively declining multiple assignments still negatively impacts your metrics, which is why your reliability, cancellation, and availability ratings took a dip, subsequently lowering your overall performance rating. To prevent this, we strongly advise using the availability toggle when you cannot take on new projects. Regarding the project deadlines, we strictly follow the industry standard of 2,000 words per 24 hours. Your assignments, including the 8,552-word project with a 4-day deadline, were calculated fairly within this standard. Furthermore, as stated in our registration terms, approval of an account does not guarantee a minimum, constant, or regular flow of projects, as work is offered on an as-needed basis according to client demand, translator availability, and current metrics. Finally, regarding your invoice, it will display as "unseen" on PayPal until we reach it in our queue and process it within the standard payment timeframe. We still have not received the screenshots of your prior emails, so please send those to [email protected] so we can investigate the communication gap. We value your work and, as offered, we are still happy to restore your performance rating as a one-time courtesy so you can begin receiving orders normally again.
