€83 for a lesson in the limits of customer service
I booked Devour’s Ultimate Lisbon Food Tour on 24 August and paid €83. Extremely heavy rain delayed my Uber, and I reached the meeting point around 10:10 for a 10:00 departure. I had already contacted customer service and was on the phone with them when I arrived. Yes, I was late. I understood that the group had to leave. I simply asked where the next stop was so I could catch up. For a three-hour walking food tour, that hardly seemed an extraordinary request. Apparently, it was. Customer service told me they could not locate the group. A company running a guided tour could not help a paying customer find its own tour, even while speaking to her directly. They offered to reschedule for the following day, when I was leaving Lisbon. That option was useless to me. My refund request was refused, and subsequent correspondence brought more explanations of the late-arrival policy. They could, however, provide a “no-show” document for my insurance. Being on the phone, standing at the meeting point and actively trying to join apparently still amounts to not showing up. I cannot review the food because I never tasted any. I can review the customer service: rigid, deeply disappointing, and remarkably unhelpful when it mattered. The only taste this €83 experience left was a bitter one.
