Awful!
I hired Coastal Moving Services for my March 2026 move from Laguna Hills to Oakland. Coastal acted as the broker and arranged Loadrans as the carrier. My original estimate from Coastal was approximately $7,800. Then, on the Friday before my Monday move, Coastal increased the estimate to approximately $15,000. At that point, with my move only days away, my ability to make alternative arrangements was obviously extremely limited. Then Loadrans arrived for the move and told me the cost would be approximately $20,000. So a move originally estimated at about $7,800 ultimately became approximately $20,000. Unfortunately, the problems did not end with the price. This was supposed to be a full-service move. Instead, my belongings sustained extensive damage, including damage to multiple Stickley dining chairs, my Stickley dining table, and an expensive Aireloom California King mattress that arrived dirty and torn and was documented as not repairable. Other furniture, framed artwork and electronics were also damaged. The delivery was inadequately staffed to the point that I ended up helping carry items myself. When I reported the damage, I was directed into the carrier’s claims process. I then spent months submitting photographs, estimates, documentation of condition before and after the move, proof of value and other requested information. After all of that, Loadrans ultimately paid me $215 for damage to belongings worth several thousand dollars. I understand that Coastal is a broker and did not physically transport my furniture. However, Coastal gave me the original estimate, dramatically increased that estimate just days before the scheduled move, and selected the carrier that ultimately handled my belongings. Based on my experience, I would not use Coastal Moving Services again. I would strongly recommend that anyone considering a broker understand exactly who will actually transport their belongings, what can cause the quoted price to increase, and what recourse they will have if something goes wrong.
