I would never have had the time to delete over 300,000 emails from this account which is over 20 years old.

Great Email Tool
Clean Email quickly indexed and sorted my email. This made it easier for me to review and decide what to trash, keep, or archive. The bonus: efficient and saves me time from reading every email.

Thank you, Tara! We love saving people time and making email easier to manage.

Does not work. Unsubscribe requests are not processable by most systems.
This app is the most useless piece of code ever written. It does not work at the system level.
My job involves running multiple mailing and subscription management platforms. There are two ways unsubscribe requests can be sent: HTTPS POST and MAILTO. When a MAILTO request is received, almost all automated processing systems scan the message for the 'FROM:' header and then extract the email address from it for further processing.
However, this app stupidly puts the user’s email address into the BODY of the message instead of the 'FROM:' header. As a result, the user is never unsubscribed from anything. All other vendors correctly place the user’s email address into the 'FROM:' header.
A drunken monkey could probably write a better app. Do not use this garbage. Your unsubscribe requests will never be processed.

Some of your points are valid, and yes, making good software is hard. However, as mentioned before, every major vendor, including Gmail, iCloul and Yahoo, puts the user’s address into the 'FROM' header.
That being said, I’ll gladly change my review if you make it somewhat easier to process your unsubscribe requests. A simple solution could be to add an 'X-…' header containing the user’s email address, along with a note in the body stating “Automation header is X-…”.
Why an 'X-…' header? Because headers are structured data and easy to parse, while most processing systems do not fetch the body from the server. This way, subscription management systems could be easily patched or updated to work with your app.

Hi there! This is Kyryl, I am the founder of Clean Email and one of the engineers behind it. I happened to design this flow in Clean Email and happy to explain why it works like that.
When designing a flow that will affect millions of people it's important to understand both technical limitations and real-life implications of our choices.
The only way to send emails FROM: the account email is to use account's SMTP to send that email, otherwise SPF and DKIM will not be aligned and delivery of such an email will fail. This approach, however, has a lot of limitations, and two of the most significant ones are:
- Most providers limit the number of emails that can be sent per day, per hour, and per minute. Providers do not disclose those limitations for obvious reasons.
- Lots of "unsubscribe" emails are undeliverable and will result in failed delivery attempts flooding the user's Inbox.
As a result, while using Clean Email, users would've started getting unexpected emails about delivery errors causing confusion and would risk getting their account blocked because the number of outgoing emails would've significantly increased beyond "normal" triggering spam protection of the email provider.
In addition to that, we must remember that there are multiple situations in which the "from" email of an email account is not the email address they subscribed with. A lot of people use:
- "+" sign in their gmail addresses ("[email protected]")
- Apple private relay which obfuscates your address
- Forwarding (sometimes multiple mailboxes forward into one account)
In all of these situations sending an email "from:" the current account will not be recognized by the unsubscribe process of the mailing list because the original email is different from the "from:" field.
Additionally, the RFC spec for List-Unsubscribe does not require an unsubscribe email to be sent from the subscribing mailbox. Instead, it is suggested that both one-click unsubscribe URLs and mailto: values contain unique identifiers of the subscription to avoid the issues described above. Placing the email in the body is an accepted (albeit not officially documented or required) way of providing additional context to the mailing list.
Realistically though, mailing list providers responsible for ~99% of list-unsubscribe containing mail currently use one-click URLs for unsubscribing since it's now required by Google and Yahoo. "mailto:" flow, while will be supported for a while, is pretty much obsolete at this point.

Sorting is very convenient.
I can search my whole inbox by sender and sender domain to catch all related emails in one spot. Very helpful for sorting, filing, deleting, archiving.
Response from Clean EmailSep 29, 2025
Love hearing that! Sorting by sender or domain can be a game-changer 🙌

PREDATORY
PREDATORY. I was charged twice and never refunded. Stay away and Marius, the only customer service rep, is rude.
Response from Clean EmailSep 12, 2025
Hi Vanessa,
We’re sorry to hear about your frustration. After reviewing your account history, we can confirm that you successfully used Clean Email to clean tens of thousands of emails across four different accounts. While we’re glad the service helped you reduce inbox clutter, we understand that the process still felt like too much work for your needs.
Regarding your concern about billing, we did not find any duplicate charges on your account. We also explained our refund policy by email — since Clean Email is a cloud-based service with resources consumed during active use, refunds are typically only issued when there are technical issues preventing the service from working. That said, we always consider exceptions and did our best to assist in your case.
We value your feedback and will keep working to make Clean Email easier to use. If you’d like us to review your case again or discuss further, please reach out to us directly at [email protected]
— we’d be happy to help.

Brilliant tool for out-of-control mailboxes.
I was an avid user of Google Inbox. When that shut down and I had to go back to gmail, it resulted in a huge, disorganized mess. I was never able to contain it and the mess kept getting bigger until I had tens of thousands of emails and was missing important emails left and right. I found Clean Email after asking chatGPT to help me come up with a cleanup strategy, and it has helped me significantly. I'm still working through the cleanup, but Clean Email has such a unique way of approaching the process that I've been able to make significant progress in my clean up. I have already cleaned out thousands of emails and I have significantly slowed the onslaught of new incoming emails to something I can actually manage and keep up with. This tool is absolutely brilliant for an out-of-control mailbox.

Wow — thank you for the detailed feedback. We’re honored to be part of your cleanup journey. You’ve got this!
