I’d caution homeowner to stay away from this company. There are many other online free resources available for homeowners to find a reliable contractor.

contractor broke binding contract
Response from BuildZoomJul 12, 2024
Hi Melodie,
We are sorry to hear about your experience with a contractor you found on BuildZoom. We’d like to clarify that BuildZoom is not associated with this contractor, or any contractors. We assist property owners with finding contractors in their local area and act as an owner's rep to help them validate contractors and get through the pre-construction process, however we don’t have our own network of contractors. We also partner with over 2000 building departments and contractor license boards across the United States to manage a database of active contractors on our website. Contractor profiles on BuildZoom help property owners make decision on who to hire, based on a lot of info, such as permits on file, BuildZoom score, reviews, etc.
Signing up with BuildZoom premium, we take you through the entire pre-construction process from sourcing contractors, gathering and comparing bids, and help to ensure necessary components of a building contract are in place.
Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Promised $217 per sq. ft. got $325
We signed a contact with BuildZoom over a year ago with the promise they could find a builder at $217 per square foot but the closest they got was $325 to $500 per square foot. When we cancel the contract the billed our credit card additional $800. So we spend $2400 to talk with 3 builders to learn we can't build our cabin.

Hi Kent,
We're sorry to hear that this has been your experience with BuildZoom.
Upon reviewing our calls and communications with you, it was definitively clear that there was never a promise of premium achieving your goal budget. In the initial call, our rep let you know a range of costs that the cost of the build could be in. When our reps speak with you about potential costs, we use our internal cost estimating tool, which considers multiple factors such as project type and budget to come up with a rough estimate on what cost could look like for any given project. BuildZoom does not host a suite of contractors that provide us the cost to build. None of the contractors are associated with BuildZoom, and we do not have any leverage in pricing for your project, as well as time frame for the project. The cost to build is heavily reliant on type of materials, land (if it is sloped vs flat), proximity to job site, and other criteria that need to be added into the total cost equation.
During our sourcing for you, we reached out to 41 contractors in the surrounding area to get preliminary estimates before moving forward with the project to ensure there was transparency with the desired scope and budget. From the ones who responded, a couple said the project was too far or out of budget, and 2 opted-in as interested. All in all, throughout the entire time we worked with you, we were transparent to you with the information we had on hand, and we continued to update you throughout the journey once our team had done research into your project specifications at greater length. BuildZoom's Premium service is helpful for property owners because it can help save money throughout the course of a project, mainly in the respect of reducing the change orders that you would typically face if you continued to go with a contractor with a low budget (This is typical from our professional experience). The value you received from your premium service was that you did find that the project is unfeasible (which is not a bad thing), and saved you the time to figure this out by other means and potentially spending much more than the $2400.
Additionally, we billed you only for what was in line with your Premium contract. The contract clearly states that you will be billed for all incomplete work. As a good faith measure and understanding that you wished to cancel your project, we provided you a 50% refund on your second invoice.
I hope that this clarifies your reservations about the Premium service.

No better than the others..
After going through the whole process, I had a customer service rep that was rude, and I ended up getting ZERO leads. What a waste!
Response from BuildZoomMay 28, 2024
Hi Scott,
We take these claims very seriously and would like to learn more about your experience. We want each person who uses BuildZoom, no matter their use case, to have a great experience. We take pride in having great customer service and do not tolerate this type of behavior. If you are able to, please reach out to us so that we can handle this situation accordingly.
It looks like we sent your project request out to 10 contractors in your area and are awaiting on responses from some. It is not common that we are unable to provide any leads, however, as the contractors who use BuildZoom are not employed by BuildZoom, we have no authority over whether or not they decide to take a job. Contractors may choose a job based on a variety of things, including budget, availability, proximity to the job site, just to name a few. We would be happy to re-source for you to see if there any availability has opened up, just let us know!

SCAMMERS. They use fake names of scammers hired to take your money. They do not have “builders” with A ratings as they claim. We paid the deposit $1,284. And received NOTHING to date but scammers wanting to chat over and over again. We immediately asked for our deposit back but they refused to provide even a partial refund and admitted they had not done anything.

Hi Susan,
We're sorry that you feel this way about BuildZoom. We do not use fake names to conduct business with BuildZoom clients.. You can check their professional profiles if you would like.
We rate contractors on a numeric score, not an alphabetic score as you mention here.To be clear, the contractors in our database are not employed by BuildZoom, nor does BuildZoom have its own network. We evaluate contractors based on a lot of different criteria to determine if the contractor is the best fit for your project and how reliable they are. Things such as (but not limited to) the number of permits they’ve filed in their lifetime (and in the last 12 months), the number of jobs they’ve completed, the types of jobs they completed, the reviews they receive on different review platforms, the number of years they’ve been in business, their bid-to-hire rate, their licenses, and how responsive & engaged they are with both their clients and BuildZoom. All of these factors, and more, go into their BuildZoom score that ranks them among other contractors in their local area.
We received your inquiry for a project on April 17th, in which we immediately reached out to you to obtain more information about your project. After roughly an hour total on the phone with one of our reps, we had our kickoff call scheduled with BuildZoom Premium. Prior to scheduling this call you signed an agreement stating that the $1,250 deposit is non-refundable. We had taken notes on the project specs and showed you the templates used for sharing contractor bids to you, in which you took our template and used yourself and then claimed that we did no work, which is false, given the work the team completed for documenting conversations, project notes, and prepping to send out to the contractors. Since the contractors using BuildZoom don't work for us, we cannot force them to read anything or keep them to a schedule, which is why some projects may take longer than others. In your particular case, all of this transpired within one week of the initial call we had with you. We never lied to you about what services you would obtain as you unfairly claim.

Very disappointed, Not worth it.
We were REALLY disappointed in Build zoom!
We wanted to be able to build a home, but had no knowledge of the process, the pitfalls, and who were reliable, vetted, architects, or contractors. We were also very busy and did not have a lot of time to do all the legwork ourselves.
We told them of our situation and that we were novices at this process.
For $10,000 (installments) ( you can cancel the contract but you don't get all your money back, as you pay them in "stages" ). They assured us they would guide us through the WHOLE process.
They would, at the very least, save us the amount of money paid to them, then if we had done all the work ourselves.
First, before you build anything, you need an architect. They gave us some names of architects and we talked to them. One had Never designed or had their home design built in the area where we are from. We found "on our own", Different architects have different meanings to what is included in square footage and how their charges are applied. Also, that HVAC systems must be designed into the drawings, and some have an HVAC expert do that.
Another is that structural engineers MUST approve the drawings, (possible extra charge) and a ground sample MUST be done where you want your house built, (extra charge).
This was Never explained to us.
In Build Zoom everything is done by Zoom visits, you don't talk to anyone in person. Also, trying to get in touch with them when you have questions, is a pain sometimes. They are not always available when you need them. They will get back to you, if you leave a message, but it could be hours later.
We did meet with a contractor that they provided, but he needed a drawing to give us a true estimate of the cost to build.
We decided to cancel the contract.
We were only in the stages of getting an architect, but we were not pleased with their service and did not feel, after providing them with half their fee, that they fulfilled their obligations they promised us. We had to spend time, on our own, finding things out when they should have provided that information.

Hi Evelyn,
We're sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with BuildZoom Premium. We completely understand that you were new to the process and BuildZoom is a great way to help busy and new homeowners with breaking ground in their new project!
The $10,000 that was quoted for your premium cost is not standard for all premium projects. The total invoice structure and fee is different for each project. In BuildZoom Premium, the service does include getting you through the entire pre-construction process with a goal of saving you more through value engineering. We do this through collecting bids, comparing those bids apples-to-apples, and then revising them and discussing with the contractor what should be included or excluded to help save on potential change orders that may occur down the road after breaking ground. We even have a contract review for you at the end of the process to ensure that the standard safeguards are in place with any construction contract.
From your review description, it looks like BuildZoom was able to help you understand some of what it takes to go through the pre-construction phase of the entire building process. We guided you towards architects who were able to help you understand what was needed for your build and provided you with more insight into what was needed to complete your structural plans.
We're sorry that you did not feel that our communication was up to standard, however, please keep in mind that just like you, our project managers are busy during the day, and getting back to you a couple hours later seems like a reasonable timeframe for a response.

They have no way to flag fake reviews
They have no way to flag fake reviews. There is one particular contractor that obviously has fake reviews up on Buildzoom, but they have done nothing to remove them or to review them even after repeated emails.
DON'T TRUST THE REVIEWS, THEY COULD BE FAKE.
Response from BuildZoomApr 24, 2024
Hi Lily,
We have requested to receive additional information from you to understand which contractor page you are talking about to check in on the reviews that you claim to be fake.
We have a review integrity team and we require that the person leaving the review provide contact information and some personal info to verify that it’s a real person leaving the review, and not a malicious character or some sort of bot that’s trying to post erroneous reviews on contractors. BuildZoom acts just like any other review platform (Yelp, Google, SiteJabber etc.). We have rigorous checks in place to ensure that accounts on both sides of our marketplace (contractor and property owner) are valid. We do have a process of evaluating new reivews to ensure they are real people leaving the review, and I can verify that we have a high review reject rate because of it.
Please connect with [email protected] to share more information about this.

Response from BuildZoomApr 24, 2024
Hi Dwayne,
BuildZoom partners with over 2000 building departments and contractor license boards across the United States to maintain a database of almost 4 million contractors. Similarly, we receive permit data from city or county building departments, which is all public data. We pull this permit data every day to ensure we have the most updated information for all of our contractors. We also search through the internet for other sources of publicly available information (such as Yelp, BBB, and others).
We never change the names of the contractor pages, unless authorized to do so, by the contractor themself. If you do believe that there is a mixup of permits on your page, we urge you to please request us to look into that at [email protected]. I will check in with our team on your profile on your behalf to see if there is anything we can fix for you.
