Due to having to do a total reinstall of Windows recently I trialled Boris FX's new Optics software with a view to replacing their old DFX offering which is no longer available. First of all it is way more expensive, it has been overburdened with an additional set of flashy but useless modules and worst of all is totally unreliable in as much as some of the modules inside Photoshop just decide on their own to shut Optics down in the middle of an excercise. So far their technical people haven't been able to tell me why so needless to say I shan't be going ahead with purchasing it. Beware!

Hi Allistair, We’re sorry to hear about the trouble you’ve had with Optics, especially after being a long time customer of the older DFT tools. We understand how frustrating it is when software doesn’t behave reliably—especially mid-project—and we appreciate you taking the time to try the new version. Optics was designed as the next generation of our DFT plugins, with added features and support for modern systems, but we know the transition isn’t always seamless. If you’re still open to it, we’d be happy to keep working with you to troubleshoot the Photoshop crashes and ensure a smoother experience. Thanks again for the feedback—it helps us improve. Best regards, Boris FX Team
