Quality Bed and Excellent Customer Service, but Some Significant Disappointments
I purchased Big Barker’s Medium Junior Orthopedic Dog Bed (Sofa Edition) on September 14, 2026, for $199, hoping to provide additional comfort and orthopedic support for my Mini Australian Shepherd, who suffers from significant hip and joint issues. The good: The bed appears exceptionally well constructed. The orthopedic foam is firm yet cushioned and supportive, and the three-sided sofa design provides comfortable headrests. I even sat on the mattress myself and was impressed with its support. It’s an attractive bed that genuinely resembles a miniature couch. Unfortunately, there are several disappointments. First, waterproof protection. I discovered that this particular model does not include a waterproof liner, nor does Big Barker currently sell a compatible one. This leaves the mattress and all three foam bolsters vulnerable to accidents. For a $199 orthopedic dog bed, I find the lack of an available waterproof solution particularly disappointing. Second, assembly and maintenance. Assembling the bed was more cumbersome than anticipated. Although the cover is machine washable, removing and reinstalling it is not something I look forward to doing regularly, especially with four separate foam components. Third, my dog’s complete lack of interest. After approximately a month, he has sat on the bed only twice. On his very first attempt, he unfortunately left a poop stain on the cover, leaving me uncertain whether the bed would still qualify for the advertised 180-night sleep trial. Meanwhile, two of my three cats occasionally enjoy it. Apparently, I purchased a $199 orthopedic cat couch! Now, credit where it’s deserved: Big Barker’s customer service has been excellent. When I contacted them regarding the waterproof liner, they offered to notify me if one becomes available and extended a 10% discount toward a future purchase. More impressively, a representative actually went to the warehouse to obtain precise measurements of the mattress and all three bolsters so I could shop elsewhere for waterproof protection in the meantime. That level of effort and consideration is genuinely appreciated. One additional concern involves customer reviews. After receiving a text invitation to review my purchase, I attempted to access the review form on both my phone and computer. Both times, I was directed straight to a personalized “Thank you for your review” page without an opportunity to submit anything. I cannot determine whether an earlier review was somehow recorded or whether the invitation is malfunctioning. I subsequently examined reviews on Big Barker’s website dating from October 20 back through August 25, 2026. Of the reviews I examined, all were five stars except for two four-star reviews. I found no three-, two-, or one-star reviews during that period, nor could I locate a rating breakdown. The website displayed more than 18,500 customer reviews. I then discovered Big Barker’s Trustpilot profile, which, at the time of my visit, displayed a 2.0 rating based on 11 reviews. Although that’s a much smaller sample and the two platforms aren’t directly comparable, the contrast caught my attention. I believe customers benefit from access to a full range of genuine experiences, including constructive criticism. My overall assessment: Big Barker makes what appears to be a high-quality orthopedic bed, and its customer service representatives deserve genuine praise. However, the absence of waterproof protection, cumbersome maintenance, and my dog’s refusal to use the bed have made this an expensive disappointment. I hope Big Barker will consider offering waterproof liners for the entire sofa-style bed, including the bolsters, and make its customer review process more transparent and accessible. Three stars for my overall experience, with special recognition for the customer service team.
