Unethical Business Practices
Unethical Business Practices / Complaint / Incident Description: Harmful Platform Practices and System Malfunction Upon registering our newly established local small business for a free account on the Better Business Bureau platform, I encountered deeply concerning and deceptive practices that actively threaten our customer acquisition. Shortly after setup, the profile prominently displayed the phrase "This business is NOT BBB Accredited" in disproportionately large, bold lettering. Immediately beneath this damaging label, the platform actively funneled potential clients away from our profile with a direct link reading, "Find BBB Accredited Businesses in Compliance Consulting." This structural design operates as a coercive tactic, penalizing businesses that choose not to pay your exorbitant membership fees by weaponizing their public profiles against them. Presenting a newly established business in a highly negative light and intentionally redirecting our web traffic to paying competitors borders on extortion. It is completely unacceptable and causes immediate, measurable harm to our operations and growth potential. Due to this predatory setup, I decided to immediately delete our business account to protect our brand reputation. I initiated the deletion process five separate times. On every single attempt, the platform failed to process the request, instead returning a "Whoops! Page not found! It may have moved or no longer exists" error message, alongside a prompt to search for other businesses. The combination of actively diverting potential customers away from our profile and trapping our data within a broken deletion system is a severe breach of professional standards. This unresolved issue leaves our business exposed to ongoing reputational and financial damage, and immediate administrative intervention is required to permanently remove our profile and all associated data from the platform.
