Nine-year client, had to file my own return at 11:59 PM on the deadline
Client since 2017. This year I prepared and filed my own return at 11:59 PM on the October 15 deadline, because Advantage One never delivered a corrected draft. Their draft was dated October 12. I identified six corrections - all straightforward, under an hour of work for anyone with the file open. None were made. Two examples. Their draft deducted $18,275 of property tax on my 2025 return; I had told them it was paid in January 2026, and cash-basis timing is the most basic rule in individual tax. On the state return, the NJ-1040NR wage allocation schedule was left completely blank, sourcing $60,737 to New Jersey for a spouse who has never worked a day there - a $3,258 error. I explained the facts to their support team by phone. They insisted on an employer letter anyway. I obtained the letter and sent it. The draft still was not completed. Over the final week I called more than ten times and requested callbacks through their portal repeatedly. The CPA never called once. The day before the deadline I held for over an hour, was promised a callback and a completed draft, and received neither. Support's answer every single time was that the CPA would call. The underlying tax math in their draft was accurate, to their credit. But a return you have to audit yourself, with corrections nobody will make and no preparer reachable before a federal deadline, is not a service I can recommend to anyone.
