9 power outages in 2 months

Xcel energy does not provide reliable electric service. We are currently having an outage that is not weather related. It's not hot, cold, snowy or windy - beautiful day all around. They estimate we will be without power for over 3 hours. I would switch if I could but they have a monopoly and want to raise rates 8% soon.

Not only has our neighborhood's Xcel bills doubled (or more) in the last year, but now they stopped telling customers the reason for outages. Seems rolling blackouts are the new norm, this morning we had thousands lose power across the state and for the 3rd time this year - the agent refused to tell me why. They used to tell you why there was an outage when they texted you. Oh yeah, they used to text you. Now it's just random outages during the middle of the daytime, lose all your work - eff up your expensive appliances constantly. Make sure you have a surge protector on EVERY electricity using item in your home if you have Xcel. I lost all my work this morning for a massive outage with no explanation. This is the third time this has happened during a weekday work morning in the last couple of months. No explanation, no apology, no credit, no nothing. Just a "it'll be back when it's back". This is not the power provider I used for the last 2.5 decades. This is unacceptable. Edit: Zero of our 2026 outages were a result of storms or downed trees. Only sunny days, in the middle of a weekday work morning. We had a 7 hour outage in Minnesota in March 2026 with 36 degree weather. The agent could hear my teeth literally chattering on the phone as we froze in our home. Zero sympathy. The agent did not understand what "below freezing temps" meant (literally). I asked "Do you know how long I am supposed to survive in my home at these temps? I already had to shut off my water so the pipes do not burst". He said nothing. I had to ask if he understood our lives were in danger if we stayed in the home, especially without any update on when the electricity would return (and the heat, controlled by the electric thermostat), he took a long time and said "Not really".

More fees/surcharges for welfare recipients or renewable energy SCAMS. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND NO OTHER OPTION IN MY AREA.

This was my first interaction with Xcel Energy, setting up my account and payment information online. I was charged a $15 fee for a “failed payment,” which may have resulted from an entry error—but Xcel cannot provide any record of the original payment details to confirm that. I asked for documentation or verification of what was entered, but was told that information is no longer available. Despite this, they still chose to uphold the charge and offered no effort to review or resolve the discrepancy. Charging a fee for an error while being unable to produce the underlying data—and declining to investigate—raises concerns about billing transparency and accountability.

Be very mindfull of requesting any work from xcel colorado as they will refuse to provide you with a breakdown of any cost associated with any project even though they are hiring out subcontractors. Heres your $5000 bill just pay it and dont ask questions.. terrible customer service, terrible buisness model, terible respinse times = terrible company! Report them to DORA.

Terrible company! They have terrible customer service and are the worst company I've ever tried to speak with. They billed me for power usage during a 6.5 day December power outage. I think we made 10 contacts with them to get our section of a neighborhood back online. Then, we got billed for 2.5 days of power when we had none. I contacted the company so many times I can't count, and each time asked to speak to a supervisor. They blew me off, didn't document the details, pushed me to paperless billing and then charged me another late fee while we tried to resolve the issue! If I could stop using them I would. I was nice and polite and know turning off the power helped prevent a fire. But to be charged for days we didn't have power, then be given the run around, and charged more late fees while trying to resolve the issue is so beyond awful, I can't give them a low enough rating. I "used" 50% less power than the previous year at the same kWh rate and my bill was at least $100 more! Find a different company if you can. NEVER use them.

At the moment I can't speak for Xcel Energy's energy services, but their customer service is quite hit or miss. We've moved to MN, and our energy supplier is Xcel. After having service established, I tried to set up an account with their website (which, along with their mobile app, is Xcel's strongly preferred method of interaction). After setting up my account, I needed to verify my email address before proceeding, which I did. For some reason, this created a doom loop where, whenever I tried to log in, I was directed to the "verify your email address" page again. The first person I spoke to through customer service was able to resolve that issue. However, when I tried to log in again, I started receiving a log in error. This error is consistent across multiple browsers and devices, including those with the Xcel app. I was advised by the same rep that it might take a few hours for the changes to propagate through their system. Five days later, same problem. I called customer service again, and this time was told by the rep that "Uhh... someone's probably working on it. Just keep trying to log in." I asked if there was any confirmation that someone was working on my problem and was told "we won't send anything out if it's fixed so... uhh... just keep trying to log in." After living in multiple states/countries where you could choose your energy supplier, I've forgotten how bad it is to live in a regulated state where the energy company doesn't have to do anything for you because you're stuck with them either way.
