Our mission is to create highly-effective, natural cosmetics that preserve the values and traditions of the Red Yao Women. For over 2,000 years, the Red Yao tribe has lived isolated, high upon the rice-terraced mountains of Longsheng. They developed a distinct culture centered around rice cultivation and hair care. By using the nutrient-rich, Longsheng rice and rituals passed down mother-to-daughter for centuries, the Red Yao women have developed a completely natural method to achieve long, strong, healthy hair that doesn’t grey with age. With only 300 tribe members remaining, we feel it our responsibility to share their story with the world. We work directly with the Red Yao villagers to source their rice, at a premium, to add into our shampoos and hair care products. We use the same Red Yao techniques and rituals, developed over centuries, to hand-make and craft our cosmetics. Due to economic pressures, the Red Yao traditions are vulnerable to extinction within a generation. Along with sourcing rice at a premium, 5% of Viori’s profits go directly back to the Red Yao tribe and preserving the Longsheng area. To learn more, go to www.viori.com.

The Viori products seem nice and work reasonably well for my hair, though the implicit claims about preventing grey hair may get them into trouble. The company has not answered who owns the rice trademark - Viori or the Chinese Indigenous people they use in their marketing materials. I think it is important to know if an American firm is exploiting an Indigenous rice.

Hi Linda! Thank you for the feedback. Yes, we are trying to balance what we have experienced with the Red Yao and making sure we are realistic with our claims. Nearly every woman in the Red Yao tribe really does have 4-6 ft long, jet black hair, without a single gray hair regardless of age. We also understand this can be the result of many factors i.e. genetics, climate, diet. However, they have a very specific hair regimen that includes the fermentation of their rice which is also well known to help improve hair. So, we are always doing our best to balance between telling their story and making sure our claims are reigned in.
We do not own or plan to own the trademarks around Longsheng Rice or Longsheng Rice Water. This was brought up very early by owners and customers that we should not pursue this path and so we haven't, and it will stay that way.
We do not exploit the Red Yao or their rice. We pay premium markups, pay a royalty, of sorts, through our 5% of profits Beautiful Reason Initiative, and work literally daily with the tribe to make sure we are fulfilling our promises to them.

This product just isn’t for me
This product just isn’t for me. The company makes many, many promises. Even though I love the minimal packaging, I’ll never find out if those promises are true. I’ve used this product for 4 washes. I have the citrus scent because the unscented option was not available, and I find the smell to seem artificial and overpowering. It reminds me of Salon Selectives in the 90s. My entire bathroom has smelled of this scent ever since I first opened the package. It never goes away.
After my first wash, I thought this product might be improving the health of my scalp. I seemed to have less hair shedding and a better balance for my scalp. However, using this product is a chore. It takes me at least 20 minutes to lather the bars enough to wash my hair, and I shampoo roots and condition the lower 3/4. With my most recent wash, I waited a couple of extra days between because I was dreading the tedious process, and then discovered as I was doing my blow dry that I hadn’t worked hard enough when washing, because I was now trying to dry hair that was still oily (I do not have super oily hair). I also realized the lower portion of my hair and the ends are starting to feel like straw. All of these things are totally unacceptable to me. Maybe this product really does make some people’s hair healthy. Maybe it stops greying (it did nothing to change my random stands). But it is too much work with an unpleasant scent and clear negative affects for me. Maybe it would work better with shorter hair?
I’m going to try making my own rice water rinse instead.

Not giving up hope...
Hoping this is a temporary 3 stars. I have used the Terrace Garden bar 3 times now, and love the sent! After the first use, my thick shoulder length hair loved it. It was so soft, I couldn't keep from combing my hands through it. However, after my third time, my hair was soft, but was drier than the first time and had lots of fly aways. Was sad this happened, but am not going to give up hope! I received the TG conditioner
bar today and excited to try them together this evening. 🤞and hoping they work better together for my hair!

I wish this product wouldn't strip my…
I wish this product wouldn't strip my color, specifically the shampoo bar. I've used it twice, and twice I've noticed patches of grey where there were none before. I do not notice my color running down the drain with the conditioner, though.
I believe they claim it is color safe, but it is not.
I'm returning the other shampoo bar (and the conditioner), Hidden Waterfall, since it's likely to to the same.

So sorry you had this experience! It is sulfates and parabens that strip away dyes and chemical colors. Our products do not have parabens or sulfates that is why we state they are color safe. Sometimes, certain brands can be effected by intense rubbing of the bar, but we rarely ever see this. I want to make sure you are extra taken care of. Please email me at [email protected] and I will make sure things are made right with you! Once again, sorry for the inconvenience! And THANK YOU for the feedback!

The first time I used it I really like it. The 2nd time I used it I thought my hair seemed very dry esp the ends. I have dry hair from coloring, highlights etc.. I think my hair needs a heavier moisturizing conditioner. I believe this might work well for people with normal hair but for very dry or brittle hair it is not the best
Response from VioriJan 28, 2021
Thank you for your feedback Tammy! We have a new unscented set of shampoo and conditioner and we feel like this could be a better fit for you. We have heard on several occasions this is our most moisturizing set. Reach out to us at [email protected] and we'd be happy to help get you an exchange.

Great Motto. Product Not Natural
Viori has a great motto and I do believe that the company is doing as they say by helping the Red Yao tribe out. Their packaging is gorgeous too.
As someone who lives an incredibly pure, organic no chemicals, uses herbs from nature, eats super healthy...I found myself really disliking the smell of the citrus Yao shampoo bar and conditioner bar. It smells like chemically dish soap and very artificial smelling. It’s so strong that I can’t keep it in my home, it’s sitting on the porch, lol. Now, if you’re use to chemical smells it won’t bother you. I’m use to smells from nature. When products are scented with pure organic essential oils they smell a certain way, this product for sure isn’t 100% pure...it’s obvious :)
I have oily fine wavy hair, so I purchased the Citrus Yao, which is recommended for oily scalp. It did remove the oil and leaves my hair very shiny. The shine almost scares me, it’s like someone coated the hair in shellac, seems so unnatural. It also takes away my natural wavy texture, so my hair ends up being flat and very straight. When you have fine hair you don’t want your hair flat. This may be good if you have very thick/ oily hair that’s super frizzy. I also did notice a lot of hair fall out with this product and yes I followed the instructions to a T on how to use the bars.
The key thing I noticed is how much the shampoo bar lathers, which indicates it is formulated with some chemicals of sorts to get it to lather. I did take a risk buying this and ignored some of the chemical ingredients which I’m now reading on the list. Their first ingredient listed Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (when you take coconut oil and manipulate it...chemical). Commonly used in the beauty industry as a surfactant. It’s ingredient #1 on the list which means it is the ingredient that is most prevalent. High levels of Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate can cause organ failure. I’m sure Viori is following the law and using a small amount that is approved by the FDA. I’m chemical free so this is no bueno for me no matter how small amount is used. This may not bother you, so carry on with your bad self...who am I to judge you?!
I’m going to make the fermented rice water myself via some YouTube research and try that instead. This is who I am. I believe in using pure ingredients straight from nature. I have like 20 gray hairs, I love my grays...let’s promote self love! If you are this way too, steer clear of viori. If you’re ok with chemicals go ahead buy viori, lol.
Bottom line: the product needs work, it’s not as pure as it’s marketing claims. Why not just sell the fermented rice water? Because it will cost more, is harder to maintain freshness for longer periods of time and America just isn’t set up in a pure natural way. It’s no one’s fault, we are all products of the system and societal programming that has made money off of us. So people and companies operate from this level. More and more people are saying no more of this. You do have a choice as a consumer to research, seek out better ways, and better products so you live a longer, healthier life and not expose yourself to things you don’t need to that may damage your body in the future.
P.S. This is an honest opinion and experience. I believe Viori could benefit from input from its customers and improve if they choose to. I hope they do.

I don’t think I’ll buy a second bar
Pros:
At first, I was in awe of how shiny the shampoo and conditioner make my hair! I’ve been using this shampoo every day (I wash my hair daily) for two months now. My hair is silky smooth, I can’t say I haven’t gotten any more gray hairs since I haven’t been using for too terribly long. It’s helped a little bit with having an itchy scalp as well. I have sensitive skin so other shampoos have caused a reaction.
Cons:
As other reviewers have stated, the scent is so so very strong, it’s pretty ridiculous how anyone wouldn’t get a headache from the smell. It’s very perfume-y (I got the citrus one) so it’s hard to believe it’s all natural. The smell, however, does dissipate after a few weeks. Either that or you get used to it, I’m not entirely sure.
The other major con for me, which I haven’t seen any other users state, is that it’s making my hair fall out at a pretty rapid rate! It’s troubling me a bit, I am not used to 20+ individual hairs falling out while in the shower AND now I have to clean my hairbrush pretty much daily because of the fallout. Before I would get maybe 5-7 hairs falling out in the shower and then maybe 20 or so on my brush. Again, I haven’t seen other reviews with the same problem. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I shower daily. It’s not hurting my scalp so I doubt it’d be due to an allergy.
Edit: Although the company suggests my hair fallout is due to incorrect usage of the bar, I have only used suds from my hands and put that onto my hair. It takes forever to get enough to actually clean my scalp but I honestly never thought to put the bar directly onto my hair, that seems counterintuitive to me. It’s been 3 months now and my hair fallout continues and the overall thickness of my hair has noticeably decreased. I’ve noticed more grays than before so that is a myth about the bar, more likely the genetics of those who live in the region the resources are harvested from.

Thanks for the feedback Cheryll. We really appreciate it! I just wanted to make a quick comment here that will hopefully help you on your customer journey with us. 99% of the time, when individuals say that more hair is falling out while using our products is because they are pulling their hair with the bar while they are using it. As you can imagine, with liquid shampoo, this is never something you have to pay attention to. Put the liquid in your hair and lather, simple. However, with any shampoo and conditioner bar on the market, you have to make a conscious effort not to pull on your hair as you use these products. That is why we encourage customers to watch our tutorial videos to better understand how to use a shampoo and conditioner bar in the most effective way. We hope that helps! If you are still unhappy with our products, we would be more than happy to refund you. We know bars are a new experience, but the impact no-plastic packaging and sustainable ingredients has on the planet is worth the effort! If there is anything we can do to earn a 5-star review from you, let us know at [email protected]. Doesn't prevent grey hairs.
Don't buy it if you expect it to prevent grey hairs which is what they market it for. It does nothing for grey hairs for me, I'm sure there are a lot more things needed to prevent them then just using natural ingredients from a tribe in China. The smell of the bar is super strong, you can smell it from the other room for the first few days. I emailed asking about their fragrances and they say it's 'natural enhancers' they use. The bar is of high quality though and you can get multiple use of it and it's pretty. Customer service is good as well. But yea they should just market it as a good bar shampoo instead of grey hair prevention.
