⭐ 1 STAR — I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND UNIVERSAL PROPERTY & CASUALTY INSURANCE My experience with Universal Property & Casualty Insurance has been absolutely unacceptable. In 2024, I had a major water damage claim after a hot water line burst in my home. The water damage buckled my hardwood floors, damaged and warped walls, and left areas where I have serious concerns about mildew and moisture inside the walls. Universal initially paid approximately $29,000 toward the claim. That money was not enough to properly address all of the damage, including the bathrooms and other repairs that my contractors determined were necessary. I submitted contractor estimates for the additional work, and for more than TWO YEARS I have been trying to get this claim fully resolved. Instead of reaching a fair resolution, Universal has continued disputing and challenging the estimates provided by my contractors. Meanwhile, I am the homeowner who has had to live with the consequences. What makes this situation even more concerning is that I am a disabled retired veteran with severe allergies, and I have repeatedly had to worry about what I may be breathing inside my own home because the damaged areas have still not been properly addressed. After all of this, Universal also dropped my homeowners insurance. From my perspective, I paid for insurance expecting the company to be there when something serious happened to my home. When I actually needed that coverage, I ended up spending more than two years fighting over repairs that still have not been completely resolved. Insurance is supposed to provide peace of mind when disaster strikes. My experience with Universal Property & Casualty has been the exact opposite — delays, disputes, frustration, stress, and an unresolved home damage claim that has dragged on since 2024. I would not recommend Universal Property & Casualty Insurance Company to my family, friends, fellow veterans, or anyone looking for homeowners insurance. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering this company to research their claims-handling record carefully before purchasing a policy. More than two years is far too long for a homeowner to still be fighting to get a water damage claim properly resolved.
Response from Universal Property & Casualty InsuranceOct 2, 2026
We understand your frustration and appreciate the opportunity we recently had to speak with you directly about your claim. During that conversation, we reviewed the payments already issued to date, recoverable depreciation, the supplemental claim process and the additional information needed to evaluate the outstanding items. When a supplemental estimate includes repairs or costs beyond the documented damage, those items require additional review and supporting information before a coverage determination can be made. We remain committed to reviewing the additional documentation as it is received and addressing any amounts owed under the terms of the policy. We would also like to clarify that renewal decisions are based on applicable underwriting considerations and was not a result of the ongoing dispute regarding this claim.
